My day began with a 30 minute walk at the neighborhood church. After that it's off to the gym for a more rigorous work out.
Janice, a regular attendee and I arrived within moments of each other. We began our workout session on the aerobic circuit. It was apparent she was not in the mood to exercise. We like to encourage each other when it seems we're struggling to stay focused. Janice is 82 years old and rather spry. I told her we would get through.
I'm not certain if she was fully convinced but she gave me a smile and continued.
Shortly thereafter, I saw Teresa, another regular attendee. She turned 80 a few weeks ago. When I inquired as to how she was doing, she said she wasn't having a good day. Before I knew it I reached out with open arms and gave her a big hug. She didn't back away, but instead welcomed my gesture. I told her things would be okay. A few minutes later I said a silent prayer for her.
When I think back on those brief encounters I wonder how often we let opportunities pass by to give a hug, smile and an encouraging word. We all find ourselves needing that extra little push from time to time.
Yes, I could have completely ignored both these sweet women. I could have chosen to remove myself from their presence. But I'm glad I was given the opportunity to spread a little sunshine. Perhaps the chirping of the birds was still in the forefront of my mind. It cost me absolutely nothing to exhibit kindness to them.
I know I could use a hug, a smile and an encouraging word sometimes. What about you?

No better words than a voice of kindness, no better life than to encourage and help. You are an inspiration, my friend. Let your deeds continue to manifest the love of Jesus to all that you meet, and may we all follow your excellent example.
Well done.
Lee you are a treasure!
