A Human Prayer

Charlotte Kuchinsky

Dear Father, I have lost my way;

Become blind in the truth of day.

I find no words that I can say

Even as I kneel down to pray.

My heart is burdened with my sin.

I beg for mercy once again.

Is there a place I can begin

To find the peace I need within?

What are these errors that I make

That worry me and make me quake?

What makes me falter in your wake

With all of humankind's mistake.

I see the shadow of the cross

There to remind me of true loss.

Must I remain in tempest's toss

Just to remind me who is boss?

Why is the path obscured with dust?

Why can I find no one to trust?

Is this punishment something just

For not becoming what I must?

Your mercy, Lord, I ask of you

For it is known to be true blue.

Please take whatever is now due

And turn me into something new.

Show me the way to walk in light;

To serve you with all of my might.

Use me to help turn all things right.

This child now waits your chosen plight.

    One must be drenched in words, literally soaked in them, to have the right ones form themselves into the proper pattern at the right moment. ~Hart Crane
