A Jacked Up Hair Experience

Kimberly Ware
I can remember my worst haircut experience like it was yesterday. I had long beautiful silky hair that came past my shoulders. I was so proud of my hair because it took years for my hair to grow that length. My grandmother always told me that a woman's beauty is through her hair.

One day, I let my aunt do my hair since my regular beautician was booked solid for a month and I had an event to go to. I wanted to look my very best. I learned the hard way that it just does not pay to let your relatives do your hair even at a discount.

When I went to my aunt's beauty shop, a few customers gave me complements on my hair and they told me that my hair was beautiful. When I sat in her booth I clearly told my aunt that two weeks ago my beautician has already put a relaxer in my hair so all I wanted her to do was to wash and condition my hair. I told her to set my hair in roller and that I wanted my hair in a curly hairstyle.

My Aunt then said, "I want to try something new on your hair." I should have known that comment was a warning sign. But I thought that since she was my aunt, that I could trust her. My aunt then put some crème on my hair and then began to comb it through my hair. I sat for a while with the creme in my hair. Then all of a sudden my scalp began burning. I told her that my hair was burning. She then took me to sink and began rinsing my hair. I asked her, "What did you put in my hair?" She then told me that it was a Wave Noveau. I told her, "What? I told you that I just had my hair relaxed two weeks ago and that all I needed you to do was wash and set my hair!' My hair began to fall out in the sink.

When I back to the booth, I saw my hair in the mirror and it was so thin. She then said, "Kim, I am going to have to cut all of your hair off because your hair is falling out in spots. I was so angry with my aunt that I literally wanted to get up and slap her for doing this to me. I could not believe that she would put a jerry curl right on top of a relaxer. Those two chemicals together call make anyone's hair fall out. She was licensed beautician and knew better. I told her that she had ruined my hair and that I did not tell her to put a jerry curl in my hair!

My aunt cut all of my hair off and my hair looked a total hot mess. I was totally devastated. My beautiful hair was gone. After I left her shop, more of my hair fell out in the back because the chemical literally burned my scalp.

What did I learn from this terrible hair cut experience? What I learned is the following, 1. To be careful who you let do your hair 2. Do not let any and everyone do your hair. 3. Before a beautician does your hair, you should see some of their clients' hair to see if it looks healthy. 4. If you are not sure about a new product a beautician is putting on your hair, you have every right to tell them that you do not want them trying new products on your hair (you are not their lab rat).

Over the years, my hair eventually grew back. I had to wear my hair in natural styles and wear braids for a couple years in order to get my hair back healthy again. My hair is almost the same length I had years ago but I have learned to be more careful and extremely selective in who I let do my hair.
