A Just Harvest, which in April of 2010 unveiled its new name, is working to help those in the Rogers Park neighborhood and surrounding communities prevent hunger by helping to provide nutritious meals while promoting the well-being of the patrons that they serve. Although the former Good News Community Kitchen offers numerous volunteering opportunities, I was lucky enough to get a position as a kitchen volunteer. I had so much fun and the time just flew by. When you get there, you wash up and put on your uniform. Next they tell you what you need to do to prep for dinner and then you finally get to serve the meal.

After the patrons have finished eating, we cleaned the kitchen and dining room. The patrons were so grateful for the meals and seemed so content while they ate. Talking and interacting with the patrons, and getting the opportunity to serve them is an experience I will never forget. In addition to the kitchen opportunities, you can also offer to donate special skills that you might have such as graphic design, plumbing, photography or even fund raising. You can also volunteer in their office if you like to help with clerical work. If you want to learn more about their volunteer opportunities, call 773-262-2297 x 22.
