A Kid and His Summer!

A Summer Poem

Ken Lyons

Staying in bed till late in the morning I remember,

Lounging all day in the bed after a full night slumber,

that's the summer my mind could render,

until the dreaded school days started in September.

The cool air of my ceiling fan blowing through my hair,

lounging around the house in my underwear,

No books, no teachers, no worry and no care,

all day and night my TV shines a bright glare.

Cartoons and comics, video games and anime,

I could indulge in it all night and day,

who cared about what the critics say,

'you'll cause your brain to shrink" living that way.

All my family would have gatherings, like a summer barbecue,

sometimes I would be embarrassed too,

"look how tall you're getting," or something adults would say to you,

got kind of tiring and annoying, I know this to be true.

I wasn't much of an athletic kid, I was the kind that preferred indoors,

until my parents made me make a choice...play outside or do chores,

basketball was an okay sport, my friends played in teams of four,

I didn't realize the work and strain, that I would be in store for.

Call me wimpy and call me puny, you can even call me lazy,

I was the average kid who enjoyed his summer, nightly and daily.

Doing what I enjoyed to do, its what really helped me, you see,

because when I become an adult, going to work will be my priority.
