When I look at my collection of novels, it is hard to choose a favorite. There are so many wonderful authors and beautiful stories but my heart tends to lean toward the more romantic of books. If I had to choose between all of them I would go with my first. A Kingdom of Dreams by Judith McNaught.
A Kingdom of Dreams was the very first romantic novel I ever read and I could not put it down. It was not just the story of Royce Westmoreland and Jennifer Merrick but also the setting.
I love history, which includes ancient England and Scotland, and A Kingdom of Dreams is set in both lands many long years ago. The two countries were at war with each other and Royce Westerland was the English king's 'Black Wolf'. Feared by many, he captured the young Scottish countess and her step sister, Brenna.
As different as night and day. Jennifer was brave and bold while Brenna was beautiful, known by many as the Jewel of Scotland. Yet, it would be Jennifer that would capture the Black Wolf's heart.
A heart that was not so easily captured. After it was discovered that Jennifer became the Wolf's mistress, a decision Jennifer made to save Brenna's life, the two kings decided to unite the countries with a wedding. Royce and Jennifer were to be married, but not everyone agreed with this decision.
Jennifer's father, the Earl of Merrick, despised everything English and vowed not to allow his daughter to marry the Black Wolf. Even though he cared little for his daughter, being that she was a female, the Earl plotted away to keep her out of his grasp.
Westmoreland caught on to the plan and abducted Jennifer and her aunt from the Merrick castle. Fearing the English Duke would murder a young priest, Jennifer agreed to marry him.
Soon love would bond them together but tragic happenings would tear them apart. With her father willing to destroy them both and her love for both her husband and family, Jennifer is left facing the ultimate decision --
A Kingdom of Dreams, by Judith McNaught, has a little bit of everything. Love, betrayal, suspense and so much more it is no one surprise I came to fall in love with this story. If it was not for this story, I would not be a fan of Judith McNaught or romance novels. A Kingdom of Dreams is one that will touch your heart and make you feel for the characters.
