The over-rated New Year's Eve kiss

Here the author narrates her experience in her own words" As we age, the things we obsessed over when younger seem stupid. One example: the New Year's kiss.

When you're young and single, the pressure to embrace someone on New Year's is insurmountable.

That midnight lip-lock is as synonymous with the holiday as noisemakers and Dick Clark. Everyone, is seems, wants to know if - and who - you plan on going after that night.

For many New Year's now, I've stayed home. But, I remember the New Year's party of 1999. I was out with a bunch of male college friends and my sister. Despite a hefty crowd of single men, not one directed a lip-smack my way. My sister, on the other hand, did score a kiss from her now-husband"

A Kiss at Midnight - A survey report
NEW YORK, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- An online survey of 2,000 U.S. adults indicates people are overwhelmingly glad to say goodbye to 2008 but are divided on whether 2009 will be a better year.

Seventy-five percent of those polled said 2008 was worse than 2007 while only 43 percent said they think next year will be better, said the Zogby Poll released Friday for Times Square Alliance, which organizes the annual New Year's Eve celebration in Times Square in New York.

On other topics, most of those interviewed said they would see in the New Year with a quick kiss of a loved one at midnight, while 20 percent said they planned to kiss no one.

More people said they will kiss their pets at midnight than kiss friends, with women in the poll being 4.5 times more likely to spend New Year's Eve with a pet than a man, Zogby said.

And, finally, when asked an open-ended question about saying "Good Riddance," those polled voted 2-1 to say "Good Riddance" to President George Bush, Zogby said. The poll conducted online from Dec. 12 through Dec. 15 has a margin of error of 2.2 percentage points.

A Kiss at Midnight -Amazon.com Review
In Shana Abé's A Kiss at Midnight, the end of the first millennium looms eminent and a generations-old prophecy dictates that the wealthy estate of Alderich--held for many years by Jozua Rune--must be relinquished to the Leonhart clan. But Rafael of Leonhart cannot rely on Jozua to act honorably, so he kidnaps Jozua's granddais ughter, Serath Rune, from the convent where she has lived unhappily for 12 years. In doing so Rafe is forced into close quarters with the feisty beauty, who is rumored to have inherited her mother's dark magic skills. Rafe and Serath make an unlikely couple, to say the least. Neither can allow themselves to trust the other; Rafe uses Serath's reputation as a witch to control Alderich's peasants, but he is Serath's only protection from the superstitious villagers. Together, however, Rafe and Serath defend themselves and each other from the malice of a madman and fulfill the prophecy that returns happiness to Alderich and its tenants, all while falling in love. An altogether terrific read! --Alison Trinkle

A Midnight Kiss = DVD Review
The story runs as - "It's December 31st, and Wilson (Scoot McNairy) is about to finish the worst year of his life. Since moving to L.A. recently, the struggling screenwriter hasn't been able to sell any of his comedy scripts, plus, he's been dumped by his girlfriend, Karen (Via Osgood). As a result, he's lonely and practically broke with no plans for the night.

The miserable 29 year- old roommate's (Brian Maguire) suggests that it's not too late to find some companionship for New Year's Eve. So, Wilson places a personal ad on Craig's List online, and soon sets up a 4 PM rendezvous with Vivian (Sara Simmonds), an inscrutable temptress who describes herself as a 300 lb. dominatrix.

When they meet at a restaurant, it's lust at first sight for Wilson, since she looks a whole lot better than billed. Still, because he's only one of a number of strangers she's invited for a speed date, he has to audition for her affections.

And even after she settles on him, it's not exactly smooth sailing, as Vivian has a lot of skeletons in her closet. First, she announces that she's only 17. Then she insists that they pray together, before saying, "This isn't get laid for free night." Although it's obvious Wilson won't be alone this New Year's Eve, as you might guess, their ensuing date turns out to be anything but predictable.

So unfolds In Search of a Midnight Kiss, an offbeat romantic comedy written and directed by Alex Holdridge. Shot entirely in black and white, this endearing, low budget indie offers as compelling a combination of character development, credible dialogue and surprising plot twists as you might hope to encounter.
A sobering cinematic treat which puts a whole new spin on Auld Lang Syne!

"A Kiss at Midnight," a Hallmark Channel original telemovie

"He has Faith; she's got male"

If you loved the Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan romance "You've Got Mail" so much that you would watch anything with even the vaguest resemblance, then make a date Saturday night to watch "A Kiss at Midnight."

It's the story of a kind, loving and yet wistful woman named Amy Flowers, played by Faith Ford of "Murphy Brown."
Amy runs a dating service called Hearts and Flowers - get it? - that has brought together countless happy couples. Those happy couples have never included Amy.

Meanwhile, in another part of the Valley, a man named Josh Sherman (Cameron Daddo of "Drifter") devotes his life to making his two preteen daughters happy.
Ever since his wife died, he's felt like he has to be two parents. So pretty much all he does is spend time with them and work, which by now even his adoring daughters are starting to think may be unhealthy.

And did we mention what work he does?
He runs a computer dating service. His pitch is that his computer techniques can provide much more satisfactory matches than the random chance and intuition of old-fashioned dating services.

So, gee, do you think there's some set of circumstances that could bring these two lovely people together?
Do you think Amy would find Josh's daughters charming? Do you think that if Amy and Josh did go out to dinner, Amy would come home calling it "the best date of my life"?

And do you think there could be some misunderstandings and behind-the-scenes action, perhaps involving the daughters that could threaten to torpedo the whole budding romance?

If so, we're not telling. No spoilers here, no sir.
Of course, this being a Hallmark movie, there really can be almost no such thing as a spoiler. As usual, every dot is connected.
Providing some seasoning outside the Josh-and-Amy story line, we have veterans Dyan Cannon and Hal Linden playing Amy's mother and her new husband, respectively.

Cannon looks alternately distressed and indignant when Amy doesn't immediately warm up to her new beau, who's fond of telling bad off-color jokes and wants her to call him "Pops."

Linden does the best he can with rather limited material, and for better or worse, the same is true for everyone else, too, since this whole picture is pretty much painted by the numbers.

Still, it's a touching story that holds out hope for everyone who, like Amy, has vowed that come New Year's Eve next year, she will get a kiss at midnight.
