One day back in July, some of the inmates went into the prison yard and saw a sight that they couldn't believe. There was a mother cat nursing 4 little kittens. They didn't have a clue how the cat got in the yard, but they soon became fascinated with their new found friends.
One prisoner, Stephen Pierce, befriended one of the little kittens. Over the course of a few weeks Stephen and the kitchen found time to form a bond. Stephen told his wife, Michelle, all about the kitten during their phone calls. Unfortunately, things turned bad for the little kitten.
In mid-September the kitten was found entangled near the top of the razor wire fence. The wire had gone through the kitten's paws; he was literally hanging from the sharp wire. Inmates worked carefully to get the little guy free. He had cuts on his face, and all 4 paws were hurt. The kitten jumped from his rescuer's arms and ran away. He was gone, hiding, someplace inside the prison yard. Pierce looked high and low, but the kitten couldn't be found. Finally, the next day Pierce found the poor little guy and coaxed him from his hiding place.
Prison officials took the kitten to the SPCA that serves Erie County, New York. Pierce asked his wife to go to the facility and check on the kitten. She reported back that the kitten was healing and should make a full recovery. The other 3 kittens from that litter had been adopted by correctional officers at the prison. That left just one kitten that needed a forever family. That little kitten, who the Pierce family decided to adopted, received the name 'Rocky', because he is a fighter. Rocky just recently was well enough to move to his new home. Michelle Pierce says he is doing good and called him a fireball!
This was a win-win situation for all parties: Rocky and the other kittens, the inmates at the Gowanda Correctional Facility and the SPCA. The inmates showed love and compassion for animals. They are thrilled with the work that the SPCA did to save Rocky. The Inmate Liaison Committee and some other prisoners are donating a portion of their prison earnings, in the amount of $1,000, to the SPCA as a 'thank you'. Last, but certainly not least, a kitten has found a loving forever family.

HEARTWARMING STORY!
Wonderful uplifting story, Abby!
Prisons are punishment, but if we don't want to make people worse than when they went in, we need to make them humane to improve people. Animals could be a good step in the right direction.
