A Knoxville Man's Van is His Castle

Abby Greenhill
A Knoxville man's van is his new castle and he will call it home for as long as necessary. Jay Pfaffman lived in a home in Knoxville , Tennessee . A normal life as it goes until a fire destroyed that home in September of 2010. So Pfaffman has been renting a home in Knoxville , but that rental is courtesy of his insurance company. As you well know, the insurance company won't pay for that indefinitely, so Pfaffman had to come up with a new plan.

This Knoxville man's van is his new castle and will be for a while as this Assistant Professor at the University of Tennessee 's position will be ending soon and he will officially be homeless and jobless. But he has a plan and he has a van, which set the wheels in motion.

Courtesy of his dad, he will be living in a Volkswagen van. The 85 square feet of living space has two beds and a table and everything he needs, so says Pfaffman. Will the "Van Man" be alone in his travels? No, he won't as he will be sharing that tiny space with his faithful dog.

He did tell us the name of his dog is Thor, and he named his van Walden and his journey will begin on April 30, 2011. Where there's a will there's a way and where's there's a van available as this one is, this man's van is his new castle .

You can follow him on his website, http://iliveinmyvan.com . Happy trials to you Jay Pfaffman! It's nice to see someone truly making lemonade out of lemons. On the website he goes into a little more detail about how he named the van as well as some other fun topics that should give you a few laughs.

Being homeless or jobless is not a joking matter. Jay Pfaffman is better off than many people and I'm sure he realizes that. But what he is demonstrating is that live goes on, even after tragedy hits. He is making something out of nothing and his determination will see him through.

We never know when we will be hit with a major life change and in order to move forward sometimes we need to take the high road. This Knoxville man isn't giving up on life; he's making a new one for himself and his dog. Good luck to you Jay Pfaffman! See you on the highway!

The world needs more people like him who can find alternatives to their situations, rather than just complaining about them. Nice story!

He's a brave, adventurous gentleman. By the way, yesterday I read in the NY Times about a woman paying $1,000 a month for a 90 square foot apartment.
