A Lazy Person's Guide to Growing Pumpkins

Johanna Swith
I grew quite a large pumpkin this year as you will note in the photo. I actually grew 2 impressive pumpkins along with 6 white pumpkins that spoiled quickly. Everyone who has seen my pumpkins is amazed and wonders how I did it. It was quite simple to grow large pumpkins really. In fact, anyone could grow their own pumpkins. After Halloween is when you want to begin the project of growing pumpkins.

When you are carving your pumpkins this year, as you remove the seeds and 'guts' of the pumpkin take the waste to a predetermined location in your yard, such as your flower bed or a hill, or by your porch. Basically you can discard the seeds and guts where ever you want. I lazily toss my seeds and guts onto the ground, preferably in a spot where there is only dirt and no grass. Then simply walk away. When the carved pumpkins are ready to be discarded smash them with a shovel and place them on the place where you tossed the seeds from the pumpkin. Then walk away.

In the spring do not mow or weed eat in the area you discarded your seeds and pumpkins. You can water and fertilize the area if you wish. When the vines appear if it does not rain frequently you should water the plants. I used animal waste to fertilize my pumpkins, specifically water turtle waste. I did not do anything else to my huge pumpkins and they grew quite fast.

I have been very happy and successful with my tactics . I devoted very little time or effort to my project and the results are evident of my success. You can bet I will continue to use my tactics, despite the method being lazy. I will continue to grow pumpkins for many years, I do not know if I will be able to grow any huge pumpkins again but I will keep my fingers crossed.

Growing your own pumpkins is quite satisfying and a great way to save some cash on your next trip to the pumpkin patch. You never know, you could end up growing enough pumpkins to sell to others, or at least share with your loved ones if you follow my lazy method! I hope this article was not only entertaining but also informative for others to grow their own huge pumpkins- no green thumb required!
