A Lesson in Hair Care Products

We beat our hair up each day when we blow dry it, straighten it and curl it. All of that heat does a number on our locks, drying it out and making it weak. Some of our hair care products do this also, but then some of them help repair our hair from the effects of all the styling and styling products and tools. Here is a brief lesson in styling products.

Shampoos

We use shampoos to clean our hair. Different shampoos can help enhance hair color, add volume or even make our hair thicker if it is beginning to thin out. The basic use of shampoo is to clean away the residue from styling products like hair spray and gel.

Conditioners

Conditioners help to soften the hair and make it more manageable for brushing and styling. Conditioning also adds back some of the oils that are stripped from the hair during shampooing.

Hair Masks

Hair masks are used for deep treatment of overworked hair. If you spend a lot of time blow drying, curling, straightening and using chemical treatments, like hair dye and perms, you can definitely benefit from a hair mask.

Hot Oil Treatments

This is another deep treatment that helps replenish the oils the hair needs to shine and stay hydrated and healthy. If you notice a lot of breakage or split ends a hot oil treatment is definitely recommended.

Serums

Serums come in different types. There are serums for adding shine to dull hair, helping to heal split ends on dry hair and also for helping battle frizz.

Pomades

Pomade is a greasy hair styling substance that is great for use with messy looks, slicked back locks and even to help keep a mohawk on the rise.

Mousse

Mousse is basically made up of air and alcohol, and it is usually used to add body and volume to a hair-do. The alcohol content, however, in mousse and other hair styling aids, leads to dryness and the need for deep conditioning.

Gel

This is a stiffer styling substance than mousse and can be used for more structured hair styles. Gel gives more control. This can be used when hair is wet, then blow dried to give the hair a glossy look.

Hair Spray

There are many different types of hair spray. There are some that have a light hold, and they go all the way up to a stiff and firm hold. The alcohol content in hair spray makes it dry fast for a more permanent style.
