A Lesson Learned

Fire Burns in Poetry

L. Lee Scott
I thought I knew --
I felt the flame,
Never guessing the heat
Was from a single candle.

Then the sky exploded.
My skin scorched,
My eyes blinded,
My heart flew free.

Slowly my skin healed,
My sight returned,
The night sky darkened,
But my heart -- forever gone.

Too late I understood
The heat from a universe
Of burning candles,
Too late to keep my heart.
