Elizabeth Schimpf says that she was handed a green drink by a frat brother who was bartending that night. She remembers feeling ill and soon after William Beebe dragged her to his room. He began to kiss her and she ran away screaming for help. Another frat brother heard her cries and told her to shut up before handing her back to Willliam Beebe.
That night her screams couldn't be heard above the party or music and no one came to her aide as William Beebe raped her. Elizabeth Schimpf was a virgin and the pain of her rape eventually made her pass out. Elizabeth had tried to tell officials at the University of Virginia but she soon felt that she was not taken seriously or even worse that they did not believe her.
Twenty years later now Elizabeth Seccuro she was handed a letter by her husband and once opened the letter brought back of rush of nightmares. The letter was from William Beebe her rapist. William wrote that he never got over what he had done and the rape had led him into drinking. He had been called in by the college and told that he could be in trouble. He quickly left school.
After years of failure and drinking William Beebe once again went to AA and this time he stayed. After going the 12-step program William realized that he needed to atone for the past and to Elizabeth Schimpf. He sent her the letter that her husband had handed her and in it he apologized for any "harm" he had ever brought to her.
It did not take Elizabeth long to realize that he was still not fully apologizing because he was very careful with his words. He wouldn't admit he raped her but says that he was sorry for harm, or what he did to her. After confronting him through email for months Elizabeth took everything to the police. Soon William Beebe was arrested and awaiting trial and the worst was not over for Elizabeth.
All over the internet people were mad at Elizabeth Schimpf. She was raped years ago they said, so why can't she forget about it. She should forgive and get on with her life and they also blamed her for trying to ruin William Beebe's life. The truth is Elizabeth Schimpf just wanted justice, the same justice that we all deserve. She receive death threats and threats of rape from complete strangers who also told her that she is not a good Christian.
Once he was arrested William Beebe denied that he raped Elizabeth but recently he plead to a lesser charge and will only get two years in jail. Prosecutors let him plead down because once William Beebe confessed he gave a chilling tale. Elizabeth had not just been raped by him so many years ago. She was gang raped and now the police need his help to identify the other men.

WHY DID LIZ GO SO PUBLIC WAS THAT FOR JUCTICE, FOR HERSELF, HEALING? LIZ HAS OTHER PROBLEMS THAT SHE NEEDS TO ADDRESS. MOVE ON WITH YOUR LIFE DONT LET THE RAPIST CONTROL ONE MORE MINUTE. GO WORK IN A CANCER WARD OR A NURSING HOME AND LEARN SOME PERSPECTIVE. I DID NOT THING BEEBE SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN OFF COMPLETELY BUT DO SOMETHING GOOOD WITH IT, NOW AS A TAX PAYER I HAVE TO PAY FOR HIM TO BE WAREHOUSED, HOW ABOUT SOME COMMUNITY SERVICE, MAKE SOMETHING POSITIVE OUT OF THIS.
No matter what anyone thinks you NEVER get over violation. There is no closure. If memories could be erased then and only then would we forget the horror and the perpetrators who violate us. Great article.
Thank you both. I have been following this story since it came on 20/20 last year. I was shocked and saddened that so many people seemed to think that because a few years have gone by, William Beebe should get off without punishment. That they seem to blame Elizabeth is even sadder.
Wow, you really tell a wonderful story of a woman who didn't get over it, like so many people think should happen, but she had the courage to find justice for the crime against her. Very good article.
You depict the insanity surrounding rape quite well.
This guy wanted to be relieved of his own guilt, but didn't want to pay for his criminal act -- and that is okay with some people.
Excellent article.
