A Letter to Santa

Monica Newton
Dear Santa,

It has been a rough year for a lot of people, economically and personally. As the mother of three college students, my Christmas list is a wish for some very special people and not me personally as you have already granted so many of my wishes in the past.

My one and only biological grandchild was born a year ago December. He looks so much like his daddy at that age. Please bring his mommy and daddy and big brother and two big sisters everything on their Christmas lists. His daddy served in the Army and was a soldier in Iraq. He honored this country and is my hero still today as he shows his children the value of getting an education as he has returned to school.

My younger son speaks of getting a degree and taking care of Mom in her old age. I am fortunate enough to be in good health and ask you, dear Santa, to bring an abundance of joy and wisdom and someone special when the time is right for him. He is looking for a job right now while going to school. Oh, and Santa? Can you bring a divisional win and maybe more for our Texas Tech Red Raiders? That would be the ultimate Christmas present for him this year.

My daughter is a beauty and a young woman. She is in the throes of first love as she tests the waters at a college halfway across the country. I miss her but I am so proud of her as well. Could you bring her whatever her deepest desire is? Oh, and maybe I do have a request of my own...let her know her Mama loves her.

My sister auditioned for the Singing Bee. She is a talented singer. Could you put your two cents' worth in on that? We are all excited and proud of her.

My best friends are a couple that live in my neighborhood. We are friends on such a deep level. He and I went to the same high school and he is like a cousin to me. She became my closest friend after they met and sometimes I tease them that if they ever split up, she gets custody of me. He is so lucky. I think she stays with him sometimes just so she does not have to worry about getting me. Anyway, they have had kind of a rough year, could you put a little something special under the tree for them this year?

Santa, we have lost so many wonderful troops, even one was too many. On Christmas Day, could you please make sure we do not lose a single soldier or any of our Armed Forces? For one day at the end of 2009, let all of them instead be able to communicate with their loved ones back home. That is perhaps my greatest wish of all.

Merry Christmas, Santa.

Monica
