I interviewed a licensed psychologist about managing stress during these economic times. Since 1998, she is in Who's Who in the World and is past president of the Oklahoma Psychological Association. Here is our interview for managing stress in these economic times.

A Licensed Psychologist Speaks Out About Managing Stress in These Economic Times: #1

Question: With an uncertain economy, what are signs you aren't managing stress?

Licensed Psychologist: Look for inability to sleep, appetite changes, pacing and irritability. Sarcastic remarks indicate a person is on edge from not managing stress. Children tend towards hyperactivity. Teens might oversleep.

Question: If these symptoms are noticed, how do you begin managing stress?

Licensed Psychologist: Show understanding and don't judge. Try to get them to talk. For example: "It seems like something is bothering you lately. What can I do to help?" If they don't share, encourage quiet time. If they isolate, encourage them to talk to someone they trust like a priest or licensed psychologist.

Question: For managing stress, what do you tell kids if money is tight or a parent loses a job?

Licensed Psychologist: Tell them the truth even if they are grade school age and even if it's serious. Don't unload your fears. They may not become reality. Honesty is best and changes aren't always negative. Maybe they will have fun with them

Question: Does it help in managing stress to have the whole family discuss changes?

Licensed Psychologist: Quite often it does. Reassure them you will face it and work hard on it together.

Question: Is there anything else about managing stress?

Licensed Psychologist: Managing stress takes understanding. Remember when under extreme stress, people often say things they don't mean. Until they learn about managing stress, they may say things that hurt because they know your buttons. They aren't managing stress well.
