A Light in the Harbor 2011 in Sandusky, Ohio

This City Wide Art Display and Auction Supports Local Charities

Sandusky, Ohio, located on the shores of Lake Erie, is a popular destination for tourists, history buffs and artists. Among the historic buildings and beautifully landscaped green spaces and parks even a casual observer soon notices a plethora of multi-colored six foot tall lighthouses. Each lighthouse has the same basic design, although each has different painted pattern.

The lighthouses are all part of one unique city wide art project. Designated "A Light in the Harbor 2011", the project displays 24 lighthouses and 6 painted sailboats. The items will be on display until Labor Day. Corporate sponsors may purchase the items with the remaining sold at an auction on September 22nd. The lighthouses and sailboats are displayed this summer in Sandusky proper with a handful at surrounding area attractions.

On our trip to Lake Erie and Sandusky we began to see these colorful lighthouses on what seemed to be every corner as we approached downtown Sandusky. The first one we saw up close and personal was the one outside the Merry-Go-Round Museum. This lighthouse was painted with a whimsical series of local buildings and attractions atop the leaves of a vine-like plant. Titled "A Garden of Dreams" this painting also utilizes many colorful butterflies. This piece was created by local artist Deborah Gundlach.

Another one we spotted carried a patriotic theme. It was located adjacent to the veterean's memorial adjacent to the Merry-Go-Round museum. Painted by artist Ann Mayer, this lighthouse proudly displays a US flag and has the seals of all branches of our armed forces painted on the top of the lighthouse just below the light room. Ann Mayer is a veteran herself.

The proceeds of this noteworthy fundraiser will benefit the Merry-Go-Round Museum and the American Red Cross. The first and similar project took place in 2008 and raised over $30,000.

I'd love to be traveling the country like you guys. Mayer's lighthouse looks terrific in the photo.
