When I hear the words 'spring cleaning' it makes me wonder why people wait until spring to clean their homes. Don't you clean all year long? Or do you let the dust bunnies grow under the beds for a full year? What is so magical about spring cleaning?
When spring arrives wouldn't it be much more fun to be outside in the yard? I would prefer being out in the sunshine just taking a walk through the yard compared to being inside washing windows and changing curtains. That brings back memories, my father washing windows and my mother changing out the heavy winter drapes for the summer sheers. I have eliminated changing curtains. I don't have curtains, just window toppers that fit right in all year long.
When my husband and I worked for a cabin rental company in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee a few years ago, we cleaned cabins. We thought it would be something we could do together and make a few dollars. We didn't make many dollars because the pay was lousy, but we did learn a few tricks and it kept us out of trouble.
When it comes to cleaning windows, only clean the "view" windows. If you don't open the blinds in unused rooms, why clean the windows? The windows that you look through on a daily basis are the windows you should clean all year long. I enjoy looking through my kitchen window so that I can see the pool. I also love to look out through the front windows to see our yard and all the deer and other wildlife that stop by. Those are the windows we keep clean all the time, all year long.
Another trick we learned was to use only one cleaning product, anything that can be used on the bathtub as well as on a mirror was the product of choice. Why drag around 3 or 4 different cleaners when it isn't necessary?
Working as a 'team' also makes a difference. When you have someone to share the cleaning rituals with you the time goes much faster. Get the kids involved, they can certainly make their own beds and pick up their clothes can't they?
If you keep up with the basics of cleaning all year long, then the words 'spring cleaning' can be eliminated from your vocabulary. Do your cleaning rituals throughout the year and when spring arrives go outside, watch the grass grow, spell the fresh air and enjoy life!

Post a CommentYou make some very good points here, Abby. I clean every week but find I still need to do "deeper" cleaning from time to time. Good write-up.
True!! Thanks. : )
I want to be outdoors in the spring..so my "spring" cleaning is done in the winter.
Yes, my husband and I clean all year long. No extra spring cleaning for us. :-)
Yes, I agree, cleaning as you go is much better. If I am going to plan major cleaning projects, I tend to plan them for early January instead of spring. But then I live in Florida, so it is usually good weather in January.
I - HATE - CLEANING.
The last paragraph is so true.
NOT A GUEST - Great advice Abby.
Rah, rah. So I DON'T have to hang out those those back bedroom windows twice a year if that's the only time I see them! You DO have a point that people should clean all year round, but there ARE things that need to be done about four times a year, like curtains, rugs, etc.
