If you are pregnant, or if you expect to soon become pregnant, there is one bit of information that is vitally important to a healthy, successful pregnancy. Your diet habits can play a huge role in birth defects and complications. Not only is the health of the baby important, yours is as well, and an easy way to give it a boost is by healthy eating. I have compiled a list of some of the foods, vitamins, and nutrients that can help you through a healthy pregnancy and listed them below.

1. Dairy foods help the health of both the baby and the mother because of the calcium they contain. Calcium is one of the most important ingredients in a healthy pregnancy for a couple reasons. First, the baby is growing, and calcium is essential to proper bone growth and development. Also, an adequate intake of calcium is important to the mother as well so she doesn't risk the baby receiving most of the calcium in her diet. You don't want to compromise your health for the sake of the baby when it can easily be prevented. Such foods as milk, yogurt, and cheese contain high amounts of calcium. Also, nuts, beans, and green leafy vegetables such as broccoli contain some calcium.

2. Foods rich in protein are also an important building block of a healthy pregnancy. Like calcium, protein is a fundamental nutrient for growth. Protein helps muscle growth and helps your body grow strong. Some good sources of protein include the various types of meats, beans, eggs, nuts, and also dairy products.

3. Fruits and Vegetables are an excellent addition to a pregnant woman's diet. There are full of all kinds of vitamins and nutrients that will help you and your baby stay healthy. Antioxidants in the fruits and vegetables help fight sickness and disease, which is a huge plus.

4. Folic acid is the best combatant against birth defects related to the spinal cord and brain. It is a good idea to take a supplement of this B vitamin before conception and during the early months of pregnancy especially. Folic acid plays a major role in the development of DNA. Therefore, it is crucial for the baby's development. This vitamin can be found in sources such as whole wheat bread, oranges, green leafy vegetables, poultry, and nuts.

Add all these essential foods to your diet, and you will have a much greater chance of a successful, healthy pregnancy. There is a good chance that your whole body will feel better with this healthy diet too. Many birth defects can help be prevented with a simple change in diet and a supplement or two. I hope this list of foods, vitamins, and nutrients has been helpful, and I wish good luck for a healthy pregnancy to all the pregnant mothers' reading this article.
