Fans of the horror or gore movie genres who have never delved into the world of Asian horror/suspense are missing out. Many people don't know that a great number of American horror movies are remakes of Asian horror or are based on Japanese, Korean, or Chinese originals. For horror movie fans interested in exploring the Asian horror genre or those who want to compare American horror against Asian horror movies, here is a list of my top five Asian horror movies.
5. Audition (1999): Directed by Takashi Miike, Audition is the twisted tale of a widower who decides to find a new wife through holding auditions for the lead female role in non-existent production. He becomes taken by one of the actresses, Asami, who doesn't seem to reciprocate his feelings. You know what they say about scorned women, right? Audition landed on Bravo's "Top 100 Scariest Movie Moments", and here's the clip from that program. (The clip contains some spoilers.)
4. Infection (2005): If hospitals didn't scare you before, they might after watching this film. After a nurse's mistake has grim consequences for a patient, her co-workers decide to cover up the evidence. An evil, mysterious infection begins to spread to those involved in the cover-up.
3. Phone (2002): After a reporter exposes a sex scandal where young people are involved, she begins receiving strange phone calls. Changing the number does no good, and after a friend's daughter accidentally answers the phone she begins to display disturbing behavior. The reporter digs deeper into the source of the calls and unravels a bizarre twist. Here is a clip of one of the scariest children I've ever seen in a movie.
2. Oldboy (2003): After being held captive, drugged, and tortured for 15 years, a businessman exacts his revenge on those who imprisoned him, enlisting the help of a female restaurant worker. Oldboy is a suspenseful ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
1. A Tale of Two Sisters (2004): This is the mind-bending story of two sisters who return from a hospital stay following the death of their mother, convinced that their stepmother is pure evil and their father is ignoring them, supernatural and bizarre events begin to occur in the home. There is a twist here that many won't get upon the initial viewing, but a second or third viewing is likely to let you see a few things you previously missed.
