A Little Spring in His Step

James Schlarmann
Where was Spring? Winter was getting nervous, knowing that her time was almost up. Spring's start time was just a couple days away and as of yet, there hadn't been any sign of him. Spring was always doing this to Winter. They'd agree on a hand-off date and then for a month before the agreed upon date Spring would either show up a little too early and have to be shooed away, or Winter would just keep right on bringing cold showers and snowfall, with absolutely no sign of Spring at all.

Winter hated Spring for this. Winter loved her vacation times. She had always planned her three season vacations years in advance, booking her rooms in various Four Seasons hotels around the world. She worked hard, she intended to play and even relax just as hard. But none of that could happen if Spring didn't a light a fire under himself and get here on time.

Winter could tell the natives were getting restless too. Each day they'd come out of their little square houses, look up into the sky, and shake their heads as they buttoned their coats. She could see that her welcome was being worn out and that everyone was ready for Spring to takeover. True to form, however, Spring was nowhere to be seen.

Winter sent email after email to Spring asking him if he still planned on showing up on the agreed upon hand-off date. She reminded him that this year the Groundhog had not seen his shadow, so technically he was supposed to arrive early. She knew that he never listened to the Groundhog so that was pretty much a moot point, but one well worth pointing out.

One day, Winter tried really hard to just make the weather Spring-like herself. She held her breath really deep for as long as she could and the sky turned blue for a couple of hours, but as she breathed in deep again, the sky clouded up and giant hail stones started falling. She was exasperated and tired. As she went to bed that night she knew she'd probably be calling Summer in the morning to let him know that he might have to take over a little early this year.

When she awoke the next morning, there was Spring, standing in her kitchen. He had a big mug full of coffee in one hand an Everything Bagel in the other. He handed her the mug and bagel and just gave her a wink as he headed out the garage, started the car and pulled off, away to start his shift.

The moral of this story? Spring is kind of a jerk, but it sure is nice when he finally decides to show up.

    @Erin - Who knows? That Spring is a real jerk, I'm telling you.

    @Donna - Thank you! :)

    Does that mean that Spring is here?.... cause I have been freezing all day, and wishing for Summer to come a little early.
