A Local Community Comes Together to Mourn the Loss of Sarah Foxwell

B.J. Rychener
Once again I am extremely proud and honored to be part of such a wonderful and caring community on the Delmarva Peninsula.

For those few of you who haven't been following my posts lately, a young girl - Sarah Foxwell - was abducted from her bedroom late last Tuesday night, the 22nd of December. Her alleged abductor was not only a convicted child sex offender who was listed on both Maryland and Delaware sex offender websites, but was also the ex-boyfriend of Sarah's aunt who was Sarah's legal guardian.

News of little Sarah Foxwell's disappearance and later abduction dominated the local Salisbury Maryland and Delmarva news as well as headlined in several national news outlets such as ABC News, CNN, the Associated Press, the NY Daily News, and the Boston Globe.

When Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis asked for the locals help in searching for what he was still calling a rescue mission for little Sarah Foxwell, several thousand residents of Salisbury Maryland and the local communities showed up at 7 a.m. on Christmas morning at the Shorebirds stadium to help with the search. Many of these people would have normally been celebrating Christmas with their friends and family but wanted to help in any way they could.

Through out the day they searched until approximately 4 p.m. when 11 year old Sarah Foxwell's body was found in the area of Rum Ridge and Melson Road's in Salisbury Maryland, close to the Delaware/Maryland line. For most of us in this small close-nit community it was devastating news to hear and many of us were lost in a silent state of shock.

When tragedy strikes on the Delmarva Peninsula, it brings out the absolute best in its local residents. We may be behind the rest of America in some of our traditions and ways of life but we do care about our neighbors.

Several local news and radio stations announced this morning that Holloways Funeral Home in Salisbury Maryland had reported that Sarah Foxwell's funeral was paid in full by local donors who wish to remain anonymous. Her funeral is to be held on Saturday January 2nd at Emmanuel Wesleyan Church on Beaglin Park Drive Salisbury Maryland at 11am.

Not that this, or anything, can bring back Sarah Foxwell nor can it take away the pain of her family and friends and neighbors on the entire Delmarva Peninsula, but it does show just how much this beautiful little angel affected so many of us and how we can do our part to make sure that this never happens again.

Rest In Peace Sarah, you are our angel now...

How so so tragic. What is wrong with this society that we spawn people that kill children! My condolences to your community.

Very sad and it happens way too often. I wonder if the aunt knew of her boyfriends' "problem" when she started dating him?

Such a sad and tragic end to this childs life. The sense of community spirit has come through in your writing of these articles. it is a sad state that such a monster can live among such good and caring people.

Thank you for sharing the community trials and tribute. Often we seem so far from each other, but when it comes to our humanity these stories break and touch our hearts.
