The Cleveland Browns are the trendy pick in the AFC North, but it is the Steelers division to lose. Nevertheless, the Steelers are a couple of steps behind the Patriots, Colts, and Chargers.
What actually happened: (12-4)
The Steelers winning the AFC North for the fourth time since the NFL realignment in 2002 was no bolt from the blue. Their number one ranked defense stifled opponents all season long, compensating for any offensive struggles.
Prediction: Cleveland Browns (10-6)
Following last season's emergence, the Browns face high expectations from the NFL community. The offensive unit is solid, but there are concerns on the defensive side of the ball, as they had issues with the pass and the run throughout the season. Still, the Browns should clinch a playoff berth for the first time since 2002.
What actually happened: (4-12)
I was one of the few that projected someone other than the Browns to capture the AFC North crown. However, I did not anticipate the disastrous season, resulting in the firing of coach Romeo Crennel. The good news is that the Browns will face lowered expectations in 2009.
Prediction: Cincinnati Bengals (8-8)
Just two or three years ago, many analysts expected the Bengals to emerge as an upper echelon team in the AFC. Injuries and misbehavior have followed this team over the past two seasons. The trade demands from their star wide receiver, Chad Ocho Cinco Johnson, whatever his name is now, did not help matters. No playoffs for Cincy.
What actually happened: (4-11-1)
It was an ugly season for the Bengals. Chad Johnson completely fell off the radar, Carson Palmer spent most of the season on injured reserve, and the running game was laughable. Nevertheless, they gained a little momentum following the tie with the Eagles.
Prediction: Baltimore Ravens (4-12)
Last season's disappointment will carried into this season. The Ravens have a new coach, and an uncertain quarterback situation, which may hinder them early in the season.
What actually happened: (11-5)
Could I have been more wrong? The Ravens suffocating defense was as good as they were the year they won the Super Bowl. They seemed to have found a franchise quarterback in Joe Flacco. The Ravens could unseat the Steelers in 2009.
