Joe Namath - Dec 20, 2003. Broadway Joe was being interviewed by Suzy Kolber. We all remember.
"I wanna kiss you. I couldn't care about the team struggling."
Not struggling as bad as an obviously intoxicated Namath was with his words.
The look on Suzy Kolber's face was priceless. She did everything but prop Namath up to keep him from falling over. The interview was replayed on television and the radio countless times. Joe later apologized and went on to seek help.
The Christie Kerr trophy kiss. LPGA golfer Christie Kerr won a phallic shaped trophy for winning the appropriately Long's Drug Challenge in California in 2008. The picture of her accepting the trophy tells the whole story. Whoever designed or approved this trophy should've been fired on the spot. The picture ran in many national publications before people actually realized what was going on. A classic picture that people are still talking about.
Wimbledon streaker - Wimbledon is famous for streaking incidents. None were more funny that what happened during a women's quarterfinal match at Wimbledon in 2006 between Maria Sharapova and Elena Dementieva. The man did a little jig, followed by a cartwheel, all about 30 feet from where Sharapova turned her back to the display. He eventually was corralled by two security guards brandishing a red blanket. Much of this was captured on the television coverage and replayed many times. The looks on Sharapova's
2007 NBA All Star Game. Charles Barkley in a foot race against Dick Bavetta to raise money for charity. Three and a half lengths of the basketball court, could Barkley do it?
The Round Mound of Rebound opened a wide lead against the older-yet more athletic-referee and finished the race running backwards... Only to fall on his behind over the finish line as Bavetta dove for victory.
The race was funny by itself, and the fact that the two shared a kiss after it was over was the cherry topping on the sundae.
ESPN's Air Time Warm Up Commercial - Stuart Scott and Scott VanPelt. The two are seen before a SportsCenter shaking their muscles and loosening up. Like a boxer before a heavyweight fight. VanPelt talking about the bit, "I never really did grasp the importance of the warm up suit. But you can be sure that I wore one and tore off my button up pants with relish, even though it took a while to button them back up."
ESPN anchor Dana Jacobson at "The Mike and Mike Roast". ESPN anchor Dana Jacobson made an complete fool of herself, swilling vodka from a Belvedere bottle, mumbling along and cursing like a sailor as Mike & Mike rested their heads in their hands in embarrassment. Actor/Comedian Eddie Griffin came to the podium to defend her after she was booed by the crowd. Master of Ceremonies and professional roaster Jeffrey Ross eventually had to pull her off stage, too. The powers that be at ESPN did a great job, in that videos of this display never made it on the internet or anywhere. Jacobson was suspended and later offered apologies.
NASCAR Fight - Tony Stewart vs. Kurt Busch at Daytona (2008)
Did anyone actually see the punch get thrown? During practice for the Budweiser Shootout in February, the two drivers who don't like each other very much traded shots on the racetrack and earned a trip to the NASCAR hauler. During the "discussion," Busch allegedly made derogatory references to Stewart's girth and the length of his hair. Stewart reportedly threw a punch that connected near Busch's right eye, though no one has gone on the record to confirm that a blow was struck.
Commentator Jimmy Spencer's take: "I think nobody was in there to see it who would talk about it, but he definitely hit him." Funny doings in NASCAR.
Drag Racing (2009) - This all happened when 14 time Funny Car Champ John Force was accused of cheating on the coverage by rival Tony Pedregon. The accusation first came from Tony's Brother, Cruz Pedergon, the series' current champion when he was about to be knocked out of the top 10 who qualify for the season end "Countdown".
I know this may confusing to many of you, but when Force lost to teammate and Son-in-Law Robert Hight allowing Hight to pass Cruz in the points standings, the crap hit he fan, and the censors hit the ESPN2 airways.
Force smoked his tires at the start and Hight drove into the finals of the U.S. Nationals and NHRA's "Countdown". After Force's Daughter Ashley Force defeated Tony Pedregon the other semi-final Tony and John Force had a heated exchange that would've made Hulk Hogan and Rowdy Roddy Piper Proud. Force even dropped a "my kid kicked your ass" to Pedregon as analysts Mike Dunn and Paul Page picked up the slack with Page trying to calm the situation and Dunn taking sides with the Pedregon Brothers.
ESPN2 was not going to cool the situation as they kept replaying the altercation, and went back and forth interviewing Tony and Force setting up a storyline and rivalry the rest of the season. Find this clip on YouTube it is great!
