A Look Back at the Movie: Office Space

A Fictional Story About the Harsh Corporate World

Ariana R. Cherry-Shearer

"Does someone have a case of the Mondays ? " If you are tired of going into the office or just completely can't get enough of heading to your little cubby hole every week, then you might get a laugh or two out of the comedic 1999 movie, Office Space.

Office Space was written and directed by Mike Judge (who also created the cartoon series, Beavis and Butthead). Office Space is centered around a disgruntled employee, Peter Gibbons who works for the software company, Initech. He hates his job, as he sits at his desk and does nothing for hours. Peter has about a million bosses who all tell him to do the same task about another million times. He pretty much hates his job. His fellow co-workers and friends also hate their boring mundane jobs as well.

After awhile, Peter's girlfriend has him go through a hypnotherapy session, which pretty much take away all of his Peter's cares or worries. He no longer worries about work, or cares about it. One day, he just decides not to come in. All of this begins to take place during a company restructuring where many of Peter sees his co-workers losing their jobs or being replaced by other so-called qualified candidates.

After Peter learns of his friends who are about to get canned, they take it upon themselves to go beat the tar out of a fickly fax machine that never seemed to work for them. With baseball bat in hand, they all take their turn at beating their frustrations out on the office equipment.

Since they are all about to lose their jobs anyway (while Peter has somehow gotten lucky to have moved up in the company), they put together a sure-fire plan to take money away from Initech. While this plan is surely to put them all in jail, they find a way to make sure nobody knows that a few dollars are missing out of the fund a little bit at a time. Everything goes haywire when the plan backfires, and ends up taking out more of a chunk than they expected...After a surprising office fire though, their plan is covered-and nobody seems to know that a plan was ever hatched...

The movie, Office Space is a typical story of corporate business, restructuring and how so many of us really do hate our jobs and are always on the search for something more meaningful. We can relate to the small talk that goes on in an office, the typical every day sayings that get under our skin or the office technology never seems to work when we want it to.

For those needing a good laugh or just someone to relate to about the harsh corporate world, grab a copy of the ten year old movie, Office Space. Even though its about a decade old, it still speaks loudly to those in business today. If you have a dark sense of humor and you hate work-take some time off, and spend a few hours at Initech.
