A Look Back at Susan Smith, Child Murderer

Keyona Ray
On October 25, 1994 Susan Smith made a decision that would forever change the lives of her family and close friends. After being separated from her husband and being involved with a wealth man named Tom Findlay, she decided to murder her two innocent children.

Three year old Michael Smith and eighteen month old Alex Smith were beautiful innocent children who at the hands of their own flesh and blood were killed. Susan Smith drove her 1990 Mazda Protege into the water at John D. Long lake. I can only imagine the looks on those babies face as they saw their mother standing there watching.

The reason behind this is that Susan's estranged boyfriend, Tom Findaly, had broken it off with Susan. He told her that she was immature and he wasn't ready for children. Why in the world did this woman not just give her beautiful children to their father, David Smith, who loved his boys deeply and is still grieving their death to this day.

According to Wikipedia on July 22, 1995 Susan Smith was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her sons. She will be eligible for parole on November 4, 2024. So, I ask you, is that enough for a woman who took the lives of her own two innocent baby boys? In my opinion, she should die the same way those precious babies did.

I remember the case well, it was such a heartbreaker. I feel more angry at her now since I have two small boys of my own. While I agreed with the life sentence (as opposed to the death penalty) based on how messed up she was, I do not feel she should ever be paroled. Her behavior in prison has been less than acceptable and she has not proven that she, as an unstable person mentally and emotionally, would not do something to cause great harm to another person should she have the opportunity to rejoin society.

    RIP Michael & Alexander.

YES I ALSO AGREE, Prison is not enough, for this murderer. I have a 2 year old and a 16 month old. I could NEVER hurt them in any way. How could a person .a so called mother do this? Susan smith does not have a heart or a soul. I know when she meets her maker, she will be judged and punished for these murders, in a way that we on earth could never punish her.

Yes, this is such a sad story. As a criminal justice graduate, it is all too common to see parents place their own desires before that of their children, I am afraid.
