There are roughly two types of digital cameras - the basic point-and-shoot models and the digital Single Lens Reflex or SLR cameras. Point-and-shoot cameras are the typical cameras that you see on the market today- slim and lightweight. The settings of this type of cameras are already pre-set to portrait, motion, wide angle, night vision or outdoors. The only thing users need to do is decide on what picture to take, set the camera to the appropriate setting, point the camera at the subject, then shoot. (Hence the name point and shoot.)
The only problem with point-and-shoot cameras is the shutter speed, it's not as fast as that of an SLR. So when you are shooting a movie subject, often the result is blurry or the picture quality isn't really up to par. That being said, point-and-shoot digital cameras are still very popular among the mass of consumers, for good reason.
As easily as you can take pictures with them, it is also very easy to upload pictures with digital cameras, unlike in the case of film cameras where you have to print the pictures and then scan them to make digital copies. Digital cameras are the main reason why social networking sites like Facebook and Myspace have become popular. You can become an instant celebrity over the Internet if you take very good pictures of yourself with your digital camera.
SLR digital cameras, on the other hand, are another breed. They are definitely more expensive than their point-and-shoot cousins, however, you get much more control over the settings. So what you get are pictures that are shot to your desired effect. SLR digital cameras are very popular among professional photographers and crime scene investigators (think Callie of CSI: Miami).
A digital camera captures an image and stores the information as digital bytes, which you can then transfer to your PC or digital picture frames.
In order to get the most of your digital cameras, make use of traditional principles in photography like, for example, not shooting your subject against the light and holding your camera with a steady hand.
