A Look at the Harry Potter Movies, the Actors and the Future

Drew Bush
This is it everyone, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince comes out tomorrow in theaters across the nation. This will definitely be the biggest summer movie of the year. I purchased tickets in advance a few days ago just in case it sold out. A friend and I are going to the theater at 1:25 p.m. in the afternoon and will probably be getting there at least a half hour early, if not a little earlier. I am not sure why the movie is coming out on a Wednesday, but I am sure there will not be much competition between Harry Potter and whatever other movies are set to release this weekend.

From what I have seen from the previews and trailer, the movie looks to have some of the best special effects of any of the others and a very interesting plot. Harry, Ron, and Hermione have grown up so much since the days of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (the first movie that came out in 2001). This movie brings a whole bunch of new subjects into the open, especially interest in the opposite sex. I refuse to give away any spoilers, especially the day before it comes out.

The Harry Potter phenomenon has gripped the world for several years now and has grossed hundreds of millions of dollars and probably well over a billion dollars if you account for the DVDs, action figures, and all of the merchandising. The final Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, is now in production and will be released in the summer of 2011. When the first Harry Potter came out, I think Daniel Radcliffe got something like close to a quarter of a million dollars for his role. Now, he is pulling in millions ($14,000,000 in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix). I'm sure his costars, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, are doing very well too. Now, the question is what will happen with these actors once the Harry Potter mania winds down? Will they have success in future endeavors? Will they continue to pursue acting or will they venture into other media?

So far, Daniel Raddcliffe starred in a number of smaller roles in his earlier years (1999's David Copperfield on TV). Also, he has starred in a Broadway version of the show Equus in late 2008. Otherwise, he is most well known for portraying Harry Potter and probably always will be. I do see him having a future in Broadway shows. After all, fans and critics praised his performance in Equus. I also believe that he may have a future in production and filming. Not many people know this, but he did film his own TV movie (My Boy Jack) in the UK in 2007. Only time will tell if he can do something that tops his performances in the Harry Potter installments.

Emma Watson, who plays Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series, emerged into professional acting with her role in the first Harry Potter installment. She has not had many big roles in other projects, but has stayed active in other aspects of her personal life. She has achieved great success in her schooling and has excelled at dancing. It's hard to say where Watson will end up in the future. She may continue in various acting roles, pursue her dancing, or do something with her schooling. Either way, she has done some great performances in the Harry Potter Movies.

Finally, we get to Rupert Grint. He too emerged into professional acting when he landed the part in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. While he was acting in the Harry Potter movies, he attended an all boy's school. He finished school at the age of sixteen to concentrate on his acting. As is the case with the other actors, it's hard to say what the future holds for Rupert Grint. As with the other actors, most people will probably remember him most for his role as Ron Weasley.

I love the books and the movies. I would guess the stars will continue in other ventures since they have a big name now. Thanks for reading my Oil Peak article. I was proud of that one....I did lots of research because it's a passion of mine and I agree, we need to get off our oil dependency.
