A Look at the Self Degrading Language Used by SOME of Todays Young Black Artists

Let the "N" Word Die!

Compuwise
Rap, Hip Hop and R&B are the genres closest to my heart. I like the beat, the sound, the message (most of the time) and the way it just makes you feel.

What I don't like is the use of degrading language predominant today in this type of music. Yes, there are cuss words used in both white and black music and I am not trying to hate on the black race but what I am mainly talking about involves something beyond a cuss word. The degrading use of the "N" word.

Before I continue, let me just say that I am white and I live in Mississippi of all places. I have some Asian blood but for statistical purposes I am Caucasian. I will say that growing up I got my share of being picked on. I won't to say that I was beaten but there was some physical abuse. The surprising thing is that it came from both black and white. Anyway, that is a little background into why this topic should even concern a "white" boy from Mississippi.

Just a few stats:

These are artists and or songs listed on one of the major music channel's recent top 20

#2."Crank That (Soulja Boy)" - bit_h = 10 times
#10. Plies "Shawty" - ass = 4 nigga = 4
#14. Kanye West Good Life - a$$ =2 nigga = 2
#20. 50 Cent "I Get Money" - F**K = 4 sh*t= 3 bi*ch= 2

This article is not complete and should not have been posted

I have emailed AC about the possibility of taking this article down.

When I saw the N word used so many times in Akon's lyrics I did not feel smug. I felt wronged. I didn't write an article about the N word being used in predominately white music because I don't listen to predominately white music. Music of black artists is closer to my heart and way of thinking, except when they have to ruin it by using the N word.

By the way, just so you know, a record company and the recording artist can sue you for using copywritten lyrics and making money off of it. Every visit you get on this article and the money you earn from it, unless you got direct permission from the recording company, technically belongs to them. Associated Content would be none too pleased to find out that you published this.

Mos Def also made a song called "Mr. Nigga"--sometimes when the word is used, it has a different effect. You chose a very commercial song, and I agree with Mike (you were way too thrilled to post it, along with capitalizing the word in the one drop article). The thing is why are you so concerned with the word? I don't get how this relates to you or should concern you in any way, shape, or fashion.

Let me clarify. I chose this title because the "N" word is used 36 times in that particular song....I do listen to this type of music but do not like the language that is becoming more prevalent....People need to be shocked back into realizing the self degrading nature of music today and the double standards that exist.

Suggestion - Don't challenge me on facts. Especially if you have pointless, unrelated comebacks.

You're always looking for "the facts," so please tell me what percentage of young adult music created by African Americans (hip hop, R & B, rap mostly but not exclusively) has words such as this. Facts please. Hell, there used to be a white group called "The Dead Kennedys" and Marilyn Manson is said to be so double jointed that he can perform fellatio on himself, but I am not trying to post THEIR words. Seems like you were awfully pleased to find this little ditty.

nope. show the raw truth of it. don't censor.

  • compuwise10/3/2007

Although I am trying to make a point, I wish I had taken out the cuss words. I could redo the article but i'm probably not going to.
