Some exercises are helpful in trying to prolong an attack from happening. Controlling your breathing is a helpful one. Remembering to breathe in through the nose, and out through the mouth so your breathing is more synchronized will help avoid shortness of breath. Talking to yourself can help when this is being done. Tensing the shoulders for a brief time and then letting them return to normal will also help relieve your body of tension enough that you can see what state the situation is in. Watching a comedy can help make you feel better if you are within the comforts of your own home, or listening to some upbeat music. Remind yourself that things are okay and that you have never been hurt by one before.

If the attack is rearing its head while you are in bed, it is best that you get up. Sleep is not going to happen when an attack is on its way. Better to get out of bed and try to regulate your breathing and watch some television. Do whatever it is that will take your mind off of the situation until your body finally caves in to sleep on its own.
