A Love Betrayed, a Heart Broken

A Poem Written by My Wife Joyce

John Mario
My heart lay all broken,
bleeding and torn.
I moan
Why had this happened?
Why was I born?
--
How could you do this?
Fracture my trust?
Turn our hope into travesty?
Our love into dust?
--
One moment of weakness,
one stolen glance
turns to temptation
to take just one chance.
--
It happened, it happened,
just happened, you say.
Just once. In a moment
years thrown away.
--
You ask forgiveness.
You beg my indulgence.
My tears fall like rain.
My hurt fills an ocean.
--
Hearts are hard healers.
Trust a tenuous mend.
Roses won't do it.
Diamonds don't send.

Infidelity a word
so comfortably trite.
You called it a mistake.
Is this easier to right?

How can I forgive?
How can I not?
How will I trust you?
That is my lot.

But, my love,
I still love you.
How foolish it seems!
This heart so tormented
Still holds on to the dream.
