A Luxurious Stay at Strater Hotel: Durango, CO

Greg Seltz
I have recently added Strater Hotel to my list of most accommodating visits. Originally founded in 1887, Strater Hotel is a historic landmark in Durango, Colorado. In the late 1800's, the town experienced a vast increase in population as miners were migrating westward; attracted by the discovery of gold and silver. One man, on the other hand, perceived an entirely different vision. Instead of working the mine shafts, Henry Strater's vision insisted that he erect a luxurious hotel to accommodate all the visitors and newfound residents of Durango. The town, however, eventually exhausted its resources and was in dire need of financial aid. Though the hotel was repossessed and relinquished to a different owner, Strater Hotel still stands to this very day.

I, too, recently experienced a luxurious stay at the ever popular hotel. Upon entry to the magnificent structure, I was struck by an amazing array of furniture and antiques. The style is known as American Victorian. Each of the 93 rooms is equipped with common necessities and elegant commodities. I was even more surprised that such beauty was presented at a low, reasonable price. We were rated a Classic floor plan for $99. Whether it is simply a comfortable, romantic getaway you prefer, or an opportunity to experience some Old West styled nightlife, Strater will undoubtedly meet your expectations.

Though we missed the opportunity to enjoy dinner at one of the favorite local restaurants (The Mahogany Grille), I was awarded a drink at the Saloon. Regardless of whether you prefer jazz, piano, or the soothing sounds of the symphony, there are three bars and restaurants to choose from. Even the employees are costumed to induce a state of the traditional Wild Wild West. Apparently, the famous writer of western novels, Louis La' Amour, was so inspired by the Strater Hotel atmosphere that he wrote multiple novels during his stay. We nearly refused to leave the comforts of such hospitality without experiencing all they had to offer. But unfortunately, other destinations lay ahead and our schedule was precious. I will add that the heartwarming continental breakfast was a delight though.

For those of you wishing to experience the beautiful scenery at Strater, simply exit the 550 in Durango and head east on 7th street. I have included the websites link below for those interested. It is a sight to see!
