A Man's Guide to Getting Married

Invitations, Flowers and Dresses? What About the Groom? What Does He Get Out of It?

Nick Brown
When my wife and I were planning our wedding, I didn't see what was in it for me. I mean she would ask me questions about flowers. What do I care? Just pick some and go with it. When it came time to pick out the invitations, I fell asleep and was rudely awakened at the stationary store. Guys do not care about that stuff. If we have to go through this, what do we get out of it? Here some things to remember when you are planning your wedding.

You have to register at cool stores first of all. If you're going to get married, you might as well score some cool gifts that will make your married life easier, like golf clubs or a new golf bag. I registered at Target because they had a Titleist bag that I wanted and Precept golf balls. The best thing about that store is that they give you a gun and you go scan anything you want. I did.

You might think that picking out the food sounds cool but it isn't. You won't be eating much on your wedding day. Even though you think you will. Instead of food you should be focusing on your honeymoon. If you know where you are going, then that's one thing you don't have to worry about. But if you don't know yet, I would suggest you look at Carvival Cruise Line. We found a 7 day and 7 night cruise for $1100 a person. That included the flight to Miami from Nashville! That is the most ridiculous and cheapest honeymoon ever (I think). I would suggest you check out the same cruise line and see what you can find. The cruise was all inclusive except for sodas and alcohol.

If cruising isn't your thing, try Vegas, even if you don't gamble, Vegas is awesome! They have best food on the planet, the coolest entertainment (as long as she doesn't make you go see Celine Dion) and lots of cool things off the strip like the Grand Canyon. You should also consider a travel agent as well. These days they are few and far between because of the internet however, some of the good travel agents have actually been to some of these places. They can tell you about places that you never knew they existed. If you want my pick for a honeymoon it would be little palm island in the Florida Keys. It's expensive but worth it.

The bachelor party should be spread out over several days. Let's say that you're getting married on Saturday and you and your groomsmen can take off Wednesday - Friday. If you can, make several golf trips (or fishing trips or whatever) and enjoy your last days of freedom. You shouldn't have to talk about the wedding anymore until the day of. If you aren't going to Vegas for your honeymoon, go there for your bachelor party.

And lastly, for some reason it is becoming more and more common for the bridal shower to include the groom. This is not right. It is a Bridal shower for a reason. Please, save yourself and stand your ground and use tradition as an excuse to get out of it. It will suck the life out of you.
