A Matter of Pigment

Linda Louise Johnson
Ginny and I went to breakfast at the break of dawn

only to see the hotel hadn't put coffee on.

So we sat to wait and chatted away

when a young woman rushed in to say

"Haven't you made the coffee today?"

She looked at Ginny, her words were clipped,

no time to waste, she was curt and flip.

Ginny smiled graciously, and shook her head

"Sorry I don't work here," she said.

I locked eyes with Ginny, and my anger rose

that woman saw you and thinks she knows!

Ginny smiled, "I'm used to it by now."

But I had to stop and ask myself how

a matter of pigment could be a clue

that someone ought to be waiting on you.

Why Ginny, I thought? Why not ask me?

Couldn't an old lady possibly be

in charge of a breakfast room, coffee and tea?

I thought we were past that these post racial times.

I thought skin was like hair and not what defines

Just blonde, or redhead, old, young, black or white

but at breakfast with Ginny, I found I wasn't right.

Great poem! So sad it is still true. I am glad I have found some time to read some of the stuff you wrote long before we met Linda.

Very well put. I agree, color shouldn't have any connection to a person's position.

Yep. I think we all have prejudices. Some are easier to spot, and sometimes we fool ourselves into thinking we're not prejudiced when we really are. And it may not be about skin color, either. We tend to judge people on very little information. Nice piece.
