A Message to Fair-Weather Hawks Fans: Support Your Team No Matter What

Dr. Jamie Yvette
A packed Philips Arena left no evidence Friday night of the Atlanta Hawks' fickle fan base as the Hawks achieved a win over the Boston Celtics in Game 6 of the 2008 NBA Playoffs. On the surface, it appeared as though the underdog team that defeated the top-ranked Celtics in a 103-100 victory had always enjoyed quite a following. However, as one who lived in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area for several years and attended many a Hawks game, I can say that the playoff Hawks crowd is significantly different from the regular season crowd. Perhaps this was just what the Atlanta Hawks needed to fuel their energy and rouse them to victory. But if in fact this were the case, just imagine how much stronger a season the Hawks might have had if fans had shown this kind of enthusiasm earlier on?

I must admit that I am a sucker for an underdog, having been one a time or two myself (we won't even get into the lack of athletic prowess that I demonstrated during P.E. in elementary school). I have never attended a Hawks game that I did not enjoy, and although the team mascot, Harry the Hawk, the Kiss Cam fun and the dance-offs are enough to keep the crowd entertained, I actually enjoyed watching the games. To watch such a young team with so much potential work to develop a rhythm is nothing short of inspiring. And to witness them play with such heart is a powerfully uplifting experience.

Of course, most people love a winning team - particularly when that team is consistent, has its share of superstars, and receives hype frequently from the media. But as history shows us, today's winning team may not be tomorrow's winning team, just as kids thirty years from now will be likely to ask their parents, "LeBron who? Was he like, an actor or something?"

Although I hope that the Atlanta Hawks will successfully make it to the next round of the playoffs, I couldn't be more proud of them for illustrating this season what true teamwork and team spirit is all about. And I hope that regardless of a win or loss in Game 7, their fans will rally behind them and look forward to next season. Having seen what this team can accomplish when they and others believe what can be achieved, I am confident that a more loyal fan base will make all the difference in the world the next time around.

Good Afternoon Dr. Love the article. I appreciate the playoffs this year. Though I want Boston to win, I much prefer the story of the giant being humbled by the underdog. I love LeBron but hold that KG deserves a ring. Funny they mentioned Dominique and Larry the last time that a game worked where two players got 40 in the same game on different teams (PP & Lebron in 08) The fact is the Celtics have a history, the hawks have an opportunity to create a history of their own. With fan's like you they have a chance to change the world. Who knows what would happen if the hawks not the Celtics had home court for game 7.

Anyway, have a blessed day Princess & keep writing.

C-Love, that was a nice hint that if I want to maintain some level of enthusiasm during this season's playoffs, I need to find another team to root for (now that the Hawks are no longer a factor). LOL.

I agree Jcorn. Unfortunately, the Hawks were eliminated from the playoffs earlier today after losing game 7 to the Celtics. But hopefully the fact that they made it this far is a sign of better things to come next season!

I think this is excellent! Whether a team is winning or losing, they need the support of their fans :)

Thanks all. I have to REALLY be motivated to write anything sports-related, so I am clearly excited about the Hawks being in the playoffs. In my book though, they are already winners for all that they have accomplished when few believed they could do it.

LOL with the Hawks and great article about supporting your team no matter what. I agree - those are two of the cutest kids EVER!
