Miami Movies: Scarface (1983)
Tony Montana (Al Pacino) wants to play rough. He's a Cuban refugee who takes over a drug empire while his wife (Michelle Pfeiffer) self destructs. There's nothing subtle about this movie directed by Brian De Palma with a screenplay written by Oliver Stone. You may not like Tony Montana, but it will be difficult to forget him.
That chainsaw scene was filmed at the Sun Ray Apartments at 728 Ocean Drive. Just thinking about that scene may make you want a drink so you can drive back to the Fontainebleau Miami Beach (4401 Collins Avenue) where some swimming pool scenes were shot. The hotel recently underwent a $1 billion renovation, and the new poolscape features walls of water intermingled with a free-form pool. For more Scarface locations, tour the trendy streets of South Beach and the culturally-diverse Coconut Grove neighborhood where Tony's sister Gina lived in a house at 409 Citrus Drive.
Miami Movies: The Bird Cage (1996)
This was the American remake of the wonderful 1978 French film and play La Cage Aux Folles. Albert (Nathan Lane) and Armand (Robin Williams) are happy running a drag queen cabaret in South Beach until they have to put on an act for a right wing Senator (Gene Hackman) whose daughter gets engaged to Armand's son. It's directed by Mike Nichols.
Visit the Carlyle Hotel that played the Bird Cage Club in the movie (1250 Ocean Drive). Additional scenes were filmed throughout the surrounding South Beach area, and in the Art Deco District which has 960 historic buildings to view between Sixth Street, Alton Road, 23rd Street and Collins Canal.
Miami Movies: Any Given Sunday (1999)
Director Oliver Stone reunites with Al Pacino on the last of these movies made in Miami. A previously unknown football player (Jamie Foxx) emerges as a star after replacing an injured quarterback. Meanwhile, an aging coach (Al Pacino) struggles with personal and professional conflicts including the ambitious young woman (Cameron Diaz) who becomes the owner of the team upon her father's death.
On this Miami movie tour, you can visit the Orange Bowl (1501 NW Third Street) which is home ground for the Miami Sharks. Go back to South Beach and the Cardozo Hotel (1300 Ocean Drive) to see where Jamie Foxx ran into his ex-girlfriend.
