A Modern Woman Decides to Get Vulnerable for Her Spiritual Growth

Day 82 - a Year with God

Marilyn Quinn
I was raised among a family of strong-willed, strong-minded Southern women who had no fear of telling you how the cow ate the cabbage. (Gotta love those quirky sayings you grew up hearing but never figured out where they came from.) Point is; I wasn't raised to be a wimp. I was encouraged to do for myself and to be strong and told that I didn't have to depend on a man for anything.

This was an idea I carried forth with me as I went out into the world. I promptly married and began a career. I worked hard, I advanced and I was soon earning the bulk of the family money. It went on this way for years until it all fell apart.

At the time, I just felt that my ex was one of those guys who couldn't keep it in his pants. I never considered until recently that maybe I wasn't taking on the role that I was called to have as a wife. We were both trying to wear the pants in the family.

Trust me, when you are a powerhouse at work and are in charge and making decisions and giving duties to others, it is hard to drop it and let it go when you get home. The power just keeps on flowing out of you.

Now that I am just a housewife and a mother; I say 'just' like it's an easy job, but that is laughable; I find myself in the position of wanting to be vulnerable. I want to be able to let my husband lead while I follow. I want him to be the man while I get taken care of.

God doesn't want us women to be wimps, but he does want us to submit to our husbands. He want us to allow them to be men and do what they were designed to do. Proverbs 31 talks about a noble wife and says she is clothed with strength and dignity. We aren't weak, we are strong. We should just be strong in the way God intended within our marriage.

I don't think I was raised 'wrong' or wasn't given the right direction; but I know now that I don't have to do everything for myself. I can let my guard down and allow someone else to lead and direct me and know that they really have my best intentions at heart. It is all part of trusting God's plans and intentions and grasping the role I am cast in with all I have. I am putting my faith out there.

"A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar. She gets up while it is still dark; she provides food for her family and portions for her servant girls. She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plant a vineyard. She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. In her hand she hold the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers. She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy. When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet. She makes covering for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple. Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes. She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her; 'Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all." Proverbs 31:10-29

Great article... but I can also say that because I'm a man and a husband married to a wife who exercises power and control at her job, and often brings it home. Thanks for sharing this. God bless...
