A Mother's Contemplation

Day 76 - a Year with God

Marilyn Quinn
Mother's Day offers me a special time to contemplate on what being a mother means to me and how I can bring Christian values into my everyday job as a parent. It brings to mind the commercial about a branch of the armed services. "It's not just a job; it's an adventure."

That is exactly how I feel about motherhood. It is an adventure. Every day there is something new going on. You never know what the kids are going to say or do. They come up with new ways to stretch your patience and test your defenses all the time.

My children have been some of the greatest blessings I have ever received; yet they come with their share of heartache and sorrow, pain and tears. You do the best you can and at some point you just have to hope they are going to stay on the right path and not stray. Of course, we all know they are going to fall off and misstep at times.

They watch our every move and emulate everything they see. So, if they are doing or saying something we don't like; they could have gotten it from us. Our behavior has to be practically impeccable around them. If your children are like mine, they don't forget anything and they always remind you of what you said or did.

Mothers all want their children to grow up to be strong and independent and stand on their own. It is difficult even so. My young children were so excited about what they made me for Mother's Day. They couldn't wait to make me open it as soon as they got home Friday. My oldest wished me happy Mother's Day via text message. Guess that is just a sign of the times. I am probably lucky to have received a Mother's Day wish from a teenager without prompting anyway.

As I grow spiritually, I am growing also as a mother. Everything I am learning and studying is being used and sharpened daily with my children. We are learning and growing together.

"Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it." Proverbs 22:6

"Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight of your heart." Proverbs 29:17

"...learning and growing together..." That about sums it up, Meryl. Beautifully written.
