A Mother's Promise

For My Son's 40th Birthday

Charlotte Kuchinsky

Just yesterday you were a boy.

You were your parents' pride and joy.

But now you're grown; you're on your own

Without need of your former home.

I look at you and still I see

The tiny babe that looked at me

Like all the world was his to take

And every goal was his to make.

Though you no longer need my heart

It remains yours as from the start.

You'll always be a piece of me

And so my soul can't set you free.

Here I will remain, just in case

You need a pain to be erased.

With loving arms I'll be prepared

To hold that life that we have shared.

One thing remains forever true

This mother's love, my son, for you.

If you need me, I will be here

Of that fact, you need never fear.

Beautiful! I agree with Lorena that time goes by so fast.

So touching, Charlotte, and true feelings of any mother. And may I add father also? I have been amazed by videos of mothers in the animal world risking their lives to protect her offspring's. The depth of love of a parent for her child cannot be reciprocated in full by the child; there may be exceptions. For a mother, a child is a child whatever the age! Thanks for such outpourings of love so openly stated, but has been a fact of life all along - siva

This brought tears to my eyes. My daughter is my heart. She is 41 and she is still my heart.
