Haunt the Zoo begins at 6:30 and runs until 8:30 during the last week of October at the Oklahoma City Zoo. Last night we arrived just after 6:30 to find thousands of people already in line. My instinct told me to turn around and go home, but my maternal instinct quickly overpowered my social anxiety. How could we ditch the event now that our daughter was in her costume and totally pumped for candy?
Since we hadn't thought to buy her ticket in advance (any kid who wants to a trick or treat bag must pay $7, adults are free), I headed to the busy ticket line while my husband and daughter got into the zoo entry line. About 25 minutes later we entered the zoo and the fun began.
Haunt the Zoo is a mile or so long trail that takes you past really impressive Halloween displays. The trail also runs past many of the zoo animals, but with the Halloween lighting they are pretty hard to see. Even so, their silhouettes just add to the Halloween atmosphere. From the moment you get your trick or treat bag you are bombarded with costumed volunteers passing out tons of yummy candy. Hosted by a number of big and small businesses, their immense effort into their Haunt the Zoo displays and volunteers helped propel Haunt the Zoo into an Oklahoma must-see Halloween event.
On top of candy, they also had hot dogs and drinks for sale. Special Haunt the Zoo prices meant you could get a small hot dog for a buck, which was great news for us hungry parents.
For $7, we had an absolute blast. I urge everyone to visit Haunt the Zoo in Oklahoma City. Just make sure to arrive early, around 5:30 or so to get tickets and a nice place in line.Visit okczoo.com
