A Nice Night for a Walk

James Covey
Fresno, California - Its finally cooling down in the central valley of California and specifically in Fresno. The people here have survived another hot and dry summer. With the cool down, unfortunately, comes more pedestrians on the sidewalks. Not the kind of pedestrians that are looking to catch a ride on the city bus or the kind that are simply strolling the town for shopping. These are the kind that are wearing minimal clothing and high heels that make some of them tall enough to be in the NBA. Yes, I am talking about prostitutes.

I, myself am a family man with Christian beliefs so my opinion is definetly not the only one that counts. In many ways I would be overly biased, which is uncontrollable due to the fact I was born and raised Christian. I have a young family and our story might be news worthy all in itself. My wife, our two daughters and I live with my parents. One of my parents manages a motel off of one of the busiest streets in town. I will keep my parents vague so their job is not in jeopardy after this story. Many of you would never move in with your parents or in-laws in this situation but for us it is simply a short stay on our way to buying our first home.

Not many of you out there have the abillity to look out of your front door and see prostitutes working. I am starting to get used to it and it almost seems as though the police are used to it as well. The prostitutes are easy to spot out. Not only because of the clothing they are wearing but also by the way they walk and eye every car that drives by and the way they shout out things like,"Hey Cutie!" or "You want some?!?!". This is definely not the kind of thing I want my daughters to hear or see when we are walking to and from our car.

I dont know if any of you are aware of Proposition K in San Francisco. This proposition is on the ballot and it is a push to legalize prostitution. As some of you know, it is currently legal in most parts of Nevada. I am not aware of any other states that are currently making this push but I feel this could be something that many states and cities start to see in the near future. Why do I say this? Money. The United States is money hungry and that has already been proven and I don't need to sit here and give another lesson about our economy because we have all heard enough on all the major news outlets around the world. I see a desperation starting to grow. How can we make more money? I believe more things are going to become legalized as well. One thing the government could tax the hell out of is marijuana. MARIJUANA!?!?! Yes, marijuana. Here in California it is legal for medical use but is greatly used by much more than those who have perscriptions. Don't think this will happen? Why not? If prostitution is getting a turned cheek then why not?

Our society seems to be getting harder and harder to shock. Headlines are loosing there abillity to keep eyes on them for too long. Put the word prostitution in the headlines and more will read. Thats what it takes now. With the desperation for money at an all time high, people, cities, and governments are going to take desperate measures to make that money. Maybe legalization of prostitution will make us better off. Maybe it will be regulated better. Maybe it will cut down on the sex related crimes. Maybe that's wishful thinking. If anything, the door is being left wide open and the American people as a whole need to see the bigger picture not the bigger butts. Its not all about money and sex. Shut the damn door because its getting cold outside!

What a horrible situation and I agree with you that Americans are getting harder and harder to shock.

That is one bad situation. I am blessed to not live in a city. I am not living in the country, but not in the city. One little thing can influence a person a long way. One little truth will out weigh a multitude of lies. I know cities all over are bad like this. The job losses is probably the reason you are seeing more woman working the streets.
