A Night of Gold Medals for the USA in Vancouver Olympics

Wednesday, February 17, 2010, proved to be an exciting day at the 2010 Winter Olympics in the Men's Halfpipe, Ladies Downhill, Speed Skating and Short Track.

Speedskater Shani Davis won gold in the Men's 1000 meter race. Chad Hendrick took the bronze medal. Talking about he and Davis after the race Hendrick told a reporter, "We're proud to represent our country. We're proud to put a few more medals on the table of the Americans." Davis was the first man to win back-to-back gold medals in the Men's 1000 meter. He will race in the 1500 meter race on February 27, 2010.

Apolo Anton Ohno placed first in his qualifying race in the Men's Short Track 1000 meter. The finals will be held on February 20, 2010. Going into tonight's races, Ohno was tied with Bonnie Blair as the Most Decorated Winter Olympian. The United States team qualified for the Men's Relay finals coming in second behind Korea. This event will take place on February 26, 2010.

Shaun White and Louie Vito, both of the United States, qualified for the Men's Halfpipe. Shaun put down a qualifying run of 45.8 out of a possible 50 points; Vito scored 41.8 on his second qualifying run. In the final run, athletes posted good scores - until Shaun White came out for his first run. It put it simply, White's run was phenomenal as he put down a score of 46.8 and jumped into first place.

Lindsey Vonn is the epitome of an Olympic skier. Going into tonight's race, Vonn had not won an Olympic medal. She suffered a bruised shin in a training run and there was a question as to whether she could ski in the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. At the Torino games, Vonn flew off the course in a training run; she had to be airlifted off the course. In December 2009, Vonn suffered a bruised wrist but did not miss any races.

At the 2010 Olympics, the weather caused Vonn's event to be put off for a few days which gave her much-needed time to heal. In the Women's Downhill race, Vonn was the favorite. Her shin was still sore but her desire for a gold medal was stronger as she hit the course. She attacked the course and gave it all she had. When she crossed the finish line and realized she was in first place, she let out a scream and the crowd let out a roar.
