In Los Angeles the Sunset Strip is the go to area for catching emerging and established artist performing at intimate settings. On April 8, the Key Club showcased the talents of The Rej3ctz , Casey Veggies , and Priscilla Renea , with John West as the headliner. John West is originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, but has become a staple in Los Angeles with his performances on Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade and other college circuits. Like his opening acts, John West has been working hard to solidify his position in the music industry, newly signed to Mercury/ Island/ Def Jam, last nights performance was an event his Los Angeles fans have been waiting for.
Basically a sold out event, the audience was entertained with three opening acts which included hip hop artists, and singer/songwriter, Priscilla Renea , who did a mixture of songs, one in which led her to take off her jacket, kick off her shoes, and flirted with the idea that something else was coming off, but that was just to get the audience's attention. With the tone set, the diverse crowd of fans and press, waited to be treated to the latest Urban Alternative artist that has found success via the help of social media. With his current single, " Lovely ," featuring Pusha T, creating an internet buzz, there was a mix of old and new fans, but the energy was indeed all love.
For those in the audience, they were treated to a seasoned show as John upgraded from his simple street instruments, to a full band, including a violinist. The set list included internet favorites, " Keep It Together " and " Love You Tonight ," as well as some new songs. After his set, some in the audience left, others chanted his name, and he returned for an encore performance, and the Key Club erupted with more energy. With his humbled affect, John West continued to work the crowd with his acoustic guitar and southern banter that adds to his unique style.
The feel-good vibe lasted long after John West exited the stage, as a female DJ mixed for the remaining guest who took over the dance floor. As the dancing continued, fans noticed that John West didn't leave after all; he stayed talking and taking pictures with his fans. I'm not sure when the Key Club closed, but if you go there chances are you'll have a good time from the opening act to last call.
Swag On.
Hustle Hard.
