A Nightmare on Elm Street Review

Allie Bojko
As I child growing up I've seen just about every Nightmare on Elm Street movie and still do to this very day (I was scared of course but had an odd fascination, I enjoyed watching all of the Freddy movies and I was only a little child). I found Freddy Krueger a lot more interesting and fun than the big fat jolly, Santa Claus. So by me saying this I wasn't just any typical girl I liked the feeling of being or getting scared from time to time.

As the Freddy Krueger movie's progressed I found the villain Freddy Krueger to be a lot less frightening. Freddy to me just wasn't all that frightening as he was in the first two Nightmare on Elm Street movies. He went through a big transformation he goes from an evil, malicious, frightening, crazed maniac to a belligerent down trotted clown. Robert Englund was and always will be Freddy Krueger, there's no one else that will ever play that role better than him. So when you do decide to watch the new A Nightmare On Elm Street film, it'll be if Jackie Earle Haley can pull it through better than Robert Englund's version of Freddy Krueger. After watching this movie it occurred to me that no matter how decent of a job Jackie Haley did , there's no one that can play Freddy Krueger better than the man that made him popular, Robert Englund.

I did however enjoy Jackie Haley's version of Freddy Krueger, I also enjoyed this movie's storyline as opposed to all of the other Freddy movie's. There's no comparison between this movie's storyline than the originals, this movie has a lot more juice and seems a lot more meatier than the other films. This movie makes you think back to all of the previous Freddy movie's, they did it in a great way which was to show Freddy's human perspective and let alone his back story, as to how he became known as the malicious villain, Freddy Krueger. It might sound weird as to how they did this but they didn't do it in a boring or bland way, they tied it up wonderfully. Freddy's character doesn't change in any way, they just hone you in all of the details as to how Freddy became Freddy Krueger, in which all of the other previous movie's never really gone to great depths to reveal his true identity or his back story. They changed up this Freddy Krueger a lot more than the previous ones, they made this Freddy a lot more cynical and down right evil, it's even creepier because we know as the viewers of this movie that his motivations, mind process and his persona just add up to him being this evil deranged individual.

A Nightmare On Elm Street was a fabulous remake because of how ambiguous they made Freddy Krueger's character as well as to how his intentions and motivations only added up to the entertaining aspect of the film. Were guessing throughout the entire film on whether he's guilty of committing unlawful acts on the children or if he was indeed an innocent man accused of a wronged crime. Half way through the film it seems as if he was in fact accused of crime he didn't commit and that he's getting his revenge by killing the children that cost him his very own life. Although we already know he's a terrible person, were left thinking that maybe Freddy wasn't such a bad guy after all. As we watch the flashbacks of him in his happier times he does look like a decent person who just genuinely loved children. It's for this exact reason on why this movie added another dimension to the film that being the ambiguity that was never shown in the original movies.

When we suddenly find out the truth that Freddy Krueger was in fact a terrible person, we realize that he wasn't only crazy because he harmed children but that he had psychotic thoughts, we soon realize this when he tells the children not to confront their parents or the authorities about the unlawful acts he commits to the children such as hurting or molesting them, or that he would kill them, it's this element of the movie that makes Freddy Krueger himself that much more entertaining and creepier to watch. When we do see the flashbacks, we already assume that he's this jolly innocent, good hearted man, but we come to realize he never was a decent man instead he was a cruel, malicious, psychotic crazed individual with intent to kill all of those children that squealed on him to their parents, which was very different to the previous films.

I enjoyed A Nightmare On Elm Street it did surpass most of my expectations. It could have been terrible but it rises about that and brings us a whole new side of Freddy Krueger we haven't yet seen and I just loved it. Jackie Haley's Freddy Krueger wasn't all that bad it was very different to Robert Englund's version but it did work for me. I'm pretty excited for the very next film if there's another one in the works in the near future and hopefully he can perfect his Freddy Krueger performance in the next one. This is my sole opinion but if you don't agree with me go ahead and see the movie for yourself to see where this movie ranks amongst all of the other Freddy Krueger movie's. I truly appreciate the individuals that have taken time out of their day to read this review I am certainly thankful for that.

So what you are telling me is that I need to watch it on DVD instead of going to the movies. Great. I love the review. The Freddy Where he has the game boy glove is my favorite one. I guess it is because he finally has fun doing what he always does. No matter how good or evil a person is. Only God is the judge of them. But if you are evil Dont be so stand offish. Let them know who you are. That is what Freddy has always taught me in his movies. Be yourself. and enjoy doing what you do.

Really good review. I didn't like it quite as much as you did, but it was much better than I expected it to be (especially when compared to the other Platinum Dunes remakes). Jackie Earle Haley was really good even if there's no replacing Robert Englund.
