A One Child Solution to the Overpopulation Problem?

Dawn A
The world at large is seemingly inundated with an overpopulation crisis, or at least a talk of the future crisis. With many claiming that the Earth is officially at it's limits with nowhere else to go but down. Seemingly everyone has some kind of solution for the issue, and some are arguing for a one child 'cap' for any perspective parents.

These same people point towards China as being the brain behind this 'ingenious' idea. A move that is wholly ridiculous, especially when China themselves are talking about removing this same limit. China has been faced with a severe population crisis due to the general preference for male babies, the female population has dropped so dramatically that there aren't enough 'mating pairs' of people to really make a difference. It is so bad, that they have a 0 population growth outlook for the future if something isn't done.

Yet, people are still arguing for this. It's an unfortunate moment when those calling for something so dramatic cannot look into a bit of research. It only takes a moment to find out the many pitfalls with the 'one child' plan, largely due to any region that has enacted it are being faced with the same exact issue.

Perhaps it is just a coincidence that the same regions that have enacted this have a preference towards males, yet- so does a fair portion of the world. If a one child plan is enacted, the same problems faced by China and India will all but be guaranteed elsewhere as well.

This isn't a solution, this is setting up a much more severe problem. While if enacted, it won't mean the end of the females of our species, it will mean that the world at large will be faced with the same problems as China. Males will outnumber women, and while the population will indeed be reduces- the overall cost will far outweigh any potential benefit from the plan.

6.8 billion people and globalisation, I hardly think there will be a lack of females...sounds like a feminist rant to me(!)
