A Palindrome Day: January 2, 2010

Jean Bailey Robor
There are rare moments when we can declare a day a palindrome day, but today is one: 01-02-2010. A palindrome is a word, number or series of words or numbers that can be read the same forwards and backwards. (Just like my last name: Robor).

The name 'palindrome' comes from the Greek language where 'palin' means 'to return' and 'dromos' means 'the way.' Obviously in writing palindromes, one must make his text return the way it has come.

Some examples of palindromes are:
Hannah
Racecar
Never odd or even.
A man, a plan, a canal, Panama!
Mr. Owl ate my metal worm.
Red rum, sir, is murder.
First ladies rule the state and state the rule: Ladies first!

Today's palindromic date is in the mm/dd/yyyy style, which is common in the United States. Interestingly, in a few days, using the mm/dd/yy style, we'll have another palindromic date: January 11, 2010 = 01-11-10. Some add in the time with the date to create a palindromic date/time, such as: January 2, 2010 at 1:20:10pm = 010210012010.

The year 2002 is a palindrome; the next palindrome year will be 2112.

Is 911 a palindrome? Only if it's written in Roman numerals: IXXI.

Ever see the movie "Holes"? The main character's name was a palindrome: Stanley Yelnats.

Similar, but not a true palindrome (actually a semordnilap), is the word stressed. Spelled backwards, it is desserts. Interesting, since I find myself craving dessert when I'm stressed! Quite a coincidence or is it? (FYI- Semordnilap is palindromes spelled backwards).

Or think of this... Could the first words ever spoken on this planet have been a palindrome? After Eve was created, perhaps Adam stepped forward, looked into her pretty brown eyes and stated simply: "Madam, I'm Adam."

Today's intellectual challenge: Create palindromes of your own. Share with others and wish them a Happy Palindrome Day!
