A Parent's Advice for a Graduating High School Student

Natasha Fox
A graduating high school student is about to start a new life and must now make decisions as an adult. Choosing a college to attend and what course to take can be very difficult for a young adult. These decisions can affect the rest of his life so it is important to be wise in making them. As a parent, I know firsthand how tough it can be to make these life-changing choices.

A few years back, my son was also in the same situation. My son who was a graduating high school student back then was having a hard time deciding what college to attend and what course to take. As a parent, I could not just look on while my son was having a hard time deciding. At the same time, I could not make the choices for him. The only thing I could do was to guide him and give advice as he decides on which path to take after high school. The only advice I can give to a graduating high school student, is the same advice I gave my son a few years back.

I told my son that it is okay to dream for a better life but it is also important to keep it real. Although they say that everyone has the right to dream but as a parent I do not want my son to feel the disappointment and disillusionment that will surely come when he realizes that his dreams are beyond his reach. If you think you are just an average student then do not aim to attend colleges where the academic standards are set really high. It is easy to excel at a college where the competition is not that stiff. To excel in college, you also need to choose a course that you know you are good at. If you believe you were proficient in math when you were in high school then choose a college course that is related to mathematics.

You do not really have to be a topnotch student in the subject area. You just need to have a good grasp of the subject. A lot of pressure is taken off your shoulders when you know you have adequate knowledge on what you are studying. You do not need to study doubly hard just to keep up with your class. This advice doesn't only work for graduating high school students. It also applies for those who are about to embark on a new career. It is always good to start at the bottom and work your way up. That way you start from a position that you know you can handle.

Once you have proven that you are good at what you do then you can always apply for a promotion. Your boss will surely appreciate the fact that you are good at your job and yet you still strive to be better. In all aspects of life, it is always best to know your capabilities as well as your limitations.
