The competition for college admissions has increased sharply over the last decade. Colleges are no longer settling for the average John Doe with a 2.5 passing GPA and general involvement. They are looking for students who stand out amongst the thousands of other eager applicants to their school. If your child has nothing special to offer, the chances of a pile of letters of declination appearing in your mailbox are high.
While it is absolutely imperative that parents offer all the support that they can through the seemingly endless process of college admissions, the ultimate responsibility lies upon the often unwilling shoulders of your eighteen year old. Institutions expect seniors to be able to live the life of adults and accept the responsibilities that are involved with such lifestyles. The days of filling out a one-page information sheet and sending in a deposit to secure your place at your selected institution are gone. Today, the process is lengthy as more and more people are applying for fewer and fewer spots.
Additionally, it is of utmost importance that you understand the financial aid process at all of the institutions that your child is applying to. You will likely be the fundamental financier of your teen's continuing education and it would certainly be helpful, if for nothing more than a planning aid for you to understand the price of a modern education. Depending on the given institution that you are dealing with, that price tag could range from a few thousand to fifty thousand dollars per year. Hopefully, you have planned ahead and saved for this occasion. However, if not, understand that if your child is dedicated to going to college, there are ways for he/she to make that happen even if you can not provide for them in such a manner.
Everyone knows that the process of college admissions is stressful for both the applicant and his/her family. Through these trying months, you both will need insight, support, and reassurance that everything will work out. Knowing these basic steps with make the process much more pleasant and smooth as you trudge your way through what every parent of a college bound student must endure. Rest assured that many before have survived and so will you. Build your knowledge, plan ahead, and stay informed, and both you and your young adult will have wonderful memories from their college years!
