Just in case you were thinking that Momie Tullottes must write so much she doesn't have a life, think again! She has six beautiful children, four of whom she homeschools. She also is a published book author, having penned a parenting book entitled, Positive Parenting Tips for Every Week of the Year. And in her "spare time", she blogs and promotes the work of fellow writers, among other things.
Momie has supported me throughout my first year as a Content Producer and I could think of no better way to honor her than to publicly congratulate her for her success. I took a few minutes out to do this, as well to ask her some questions so that she could share a few inspiring words with other members of the AC community.
Dr. M: First of all, congratulations on achieving a clout level of 10 here on AC! When you first embarked on this journey at Associated Content, what thoughts in general ran through your mind and what goals, if any, did you set for yourself?
Momie: Truthfully, when I first heard about AC, I figured it was going to be another "free" work- at- home scam that didn't work out (I had tried a few), but being the positive person that I am, I decided to try it out anyway. I figured since it was free to join and writing was something I did for free on my blogs already, I really had nothing to lose. After my first few pieces got accepted, published, and paid for, I realized the possibilities at AC. It was then that I decided I wanted to reach clout 10 in one year, but wasn't sure I could. I did it in 1 year and 5 months!
Dr. M: What advice would you give to all of the Content Producers out there who desire to reach the level of success that you have achieved here on AC?
Momie: I would say read, read, read and write, write, write. Read the articles of various successful writers on AC and learn from them, read the forums and even post questions, and read all you can find on web writing. Writing for the web and writing in general are two different things, as I quickly found out. A well-written piece will not always garner a good number of page views. Upfront payments are great, but there is also money in the page views and if done right, it can be residual money.
In web writing, it's more about finding a balance between your best writing and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) tactics. If the search engines don't pick up your writing, no one is going to see it, which means no page view money. Low page view averages can also lead to low upfront offers. Keywording is very important and with practice, you can learn to do it so that it doesn't look like that's what you are doing. I still have some work to do in this area myself, but with practice and the help of other great writers on AC, I am getting there.
As for the writing itself, just do it. If you stop and overanalyze on how long the review process is taking or wondering if it's good enough, you don't have time to write new content. Being a perfectionist, I struggled with this a lot in the beginning. I wanted everything to be perfect. The problem is, nothing's perfect and it never will be. Just do your best and then submit and move on to the next piece. AC is a great place to grow in your writing. I have grown immensely in my writing since starting with AC.
I am embarrassed to say so, but some of my first submissions to AC are horribly formatted and full of mistakes. I'm grateful to those who actually read that stuff and even stuck by me to the present point in time. The lesson: be sure to create spaces between paragraphs and proofread more than once. Even get someone else to look over your work. A space every 3 - 5 sentences seems to look nice on AC, in my opinion. Not everyone will agree on the exact format and the same one will not work for every article, but the basic point is to be sure your article is not one long paragraph. I noticed that is a common mistake among new AC writers and I was definitely one of them.
The last thing I would say here is to get to know fellow CP's. There are a great deal of nice people on AC. I figured out by accident - out of a love for reading - that when you read the work of others, they may become interested in yours as well. Some will even subscribe and become continuous readers. You may also make some great friends in the process.
Dr. M: It seems that you are a stranger to no one at AC. In general, how do you find the time to interact with so many Content Producers while staying on top of your own writing and all of your other responsibilities?
Momie: Whenever I submit an article, check comments, or sign onto AC in general, I try to take time to visit the CP page of a new CP, a CP newly discovered by me, or one of those whose work I read regularly. Even just a few minutes is enough time to read a few pieces of AC content. Besides writing, reading is one of my favorite hobbies, so that part is easy.
I try to also leave comments that will allow the writer to know what I thought. I appreciate that, so my intent is to show the same appreciation back. If I'm busy, I might leave a smiley face or "great job" as a comment if I liked the article. This is simply to let them know I read the article and enjoyed it. I try not to do this too often, but with all I do, I have days where I just don't have time to leave the responses that I want to leave.
Dr. M: Now that you have reached clout level 10, where do you see yourself going from here with your writing?
Momie: As you mentioned above, I have already had one book published. I have several in the works right now. A couple of children's books and a second Positive Parenting Tips book will be the first to come of a good number of book projects. I also plan to continue writing for AC, as well as other websites. AC is like a family to me, so no matter what else I end up doing or becoming a part of, I have no plans to leave AC!
