A Perfect Getaway - Film Review

Please acknowledge that I critique the aforementioned title, and base the associated review off personal opinion. However, I personally believe that perspective is responsible for separating the individual opinion, and hence provides for contradictive views. This film, in particular, was written by David Twohy, and is a 2009thriller featuring an amazing cast. For those interested in A Perfect Getaway, see the film. For those not interested, read the spoilers below.

The Summary

The film centers on newlywed couple, Cliff and Cydney, as they embark on an adventure throughout the Hawaiian Islands. As they proceed down the near isolated, rugged terrain, various encounters involve suspicion and fear after a local murder is reported. The suspects are profiled as a male/female couple. Naturally, multiple couples are acquainted and introduced via the filming to induce a profound and mysterious script. Two immediate suspects include Nick and Gina, a rather bizarre couple who seemingly appear to indulge in storytelling and fictional reputations. Additionally, disgruntled hitchhikers Kale and Cleo fit the profile. The storyline delicately unfolds to reveal the actual serial killers after an hour of dialogue and scenic beauty. Though the audience suspects the awkward, manipulative Nick and Gina, the story surprisingly opposes this theory and provokes additional motives. Apparently, Cliff and Cydney are not the normal tourists, but are in fact, serial killers on their latest campaign. Nick and Gina defend themselves accordingly, and eventually the cops discover Cliff is the sadistic mastermind.

The Characters

Cliff and Cydney are portrayed by Steve Zahn and Milla Jovovich as the newlywed, serial killers. My personal favorite, Timothy Olyphant, is cast as Nick, with Kiele Sanchez as Gina. Up and coming actor, Chris Hemsworth, who is currently signed to play the part of the comic hero, Thor, is Kale. The beautiful, Marley Shelton, is Cleo.

My Opinion

I initially wanted to see the film in theaters, after critics claimed it fairly unpredictable in relation to other thrillers; however, I awaited the DVD release. Obviously, though, assuming you have read this far, you already know the ending. Regardless, the film is quite entertaining. The serial killing couple are the only individuals that you grow to despise, especially during their brief moments of terror and acting like the normal tourists. Nick and Gina though are fantastic, and are not categorized in the aforementioned group. It is obvious that the serial killers chose the wrong couple to stalk in this film. Despite the brief action sequences and seemingly long flashbacks, I admit that I enjoyed the latter of the film overall.

I thought this was a scary movie and didn't want to see it, but my husband brought it home anyway and I watched it. It was actually good. Suspense and twists, but not too scary. It definitely wouldn't have been as good if you knew the ending before watching it.

Movie was okay for me, formula was a bit off, but the ladies were looking great!

I agree. I thought the movie was pretty clever - these days it's almost impossible to truly surprise an audience - and I totally dug the good couple. Everyone reacted reasonably, which can be rare in thrillers. We recommend this one to everyone we know.
