A Perfect Morning

A Poem About Appreciating the Morning's Moments

Keri
A dog's enthusiasm as I reach for the leash
inspires the squeaking of the front screen door
and the creaking of the top step,
gravel stirs beneath my slipper-covered feet.

Stare across the dew-glistened grass,
a sunray glow upon my face,
the cool breeze clears my head
and an awareness of the hummingbird's wings.

Autumn colors outline the streetscape
with the aromas of seasoned leaves,
few birds remain and stir in their nests
as do all creatures in a near distance.

Not until I hear the dog's faint panting
as we return to the squeaking screen door
and I see my love lying there sleeping,
do I realize this is a perfect morning.
